specific Merc rims info sought

I saw this Syncro just down the road from me fitted with these nice 15" Merc rims and BFG tyres, and wondered if anyone here could help me identify the rims? I've attached a picture of it.

I'm looking for what model / year(s) Merc car they came from, so I can look for some - I greatly prefer these to the black steel rims.

I contacted the owner who said the van came with them, and gave me the PO details, but he's not responding..

Thanks in advance!

Gaetan

Probably Go Westy Wheels.

See link for 15"version http://www.gowesty.com/product/wheels/3076/15x7-alloy-wheel-set-2wd-?v=

I know a guy in Melbourne that was selling a set recently.

I will ask him.

I have the same on my 2wd caravelle. Mine are 16 x 7" wheels with an ET of 23. They fit perfectly.

Cheers,

Scott

Hi Guys,

I purchased theses from Germany via ebay for $408.37 for a set of 4 with free postage. Arrived in about 4 weeks.  I have yet to fit them to the car, they may need spacers but I have some 5mm and 6mm spacers so by my estimate they are a cost effective solution.

HHhhhmmmmmmmm, what a conundrum. Well I wonder where the truth does lie.

The pic shows tyres are BFG old series LT215/75 R15 100/97S, seen often on syncro.

So what's the most likely that the pic shows MB or GW rims .... alternatives are:

Used MB rims with MB centre caps, when bought.

OR

New GW rims and while there, would have bought a set of GW (looks like VW) centre caps to suit:

http://www.gowesty.com/product/hubcaps-wheel-covers/24217/gowesty-alloy-wheel-center-cap?v=

OR

New GW rims, ignored availability of GW (VW) centre caps, then sourced used MB centre caps elsewhere. Really???!!!

My money's on a set of used MB rims that came with MB centre caps.

Cheers.

Ken

Why would you need spacers for 37 when the ET is about the same as standard at 31, is that 6mm spacers then?

Your last guess is mine too, I reckon they are early ‘90s Merc 190E rims.
Wonder if they were a straight fit or needed any adjustments, spacers or longer lugs..

Could be from an old E- or S-Klass, then it would be a straight fit.
190e used an odd offset of 4x and 12mm bolts (so drilling is necessary).

Hi Gaetan,

As I said before, for the MB rim links I posted, the MB rim has an ET44 offset. Syncro rim spec is ET30.

So that may well be at least one of the issues that need addressing.

Link: https://www.wheel-size.com/articles/what-is-the-wheel-offset/

Interestingly though, my syncro has 15" MB steel rims, stamped ET49. These were fitted in 1992 by 1st private owner and have remained on ever since. Some time ago, when I measured actual ET offset using Les Harris's "how to measure ET" instructions, I found they were around ET 31. So a conundrum there too.

I guess you need to track down one of those MB rims to first check suitability for a syncro, before purchase.

Might be a whole lot simpler to buy known rims that are ET30 +/- 5mm.

It's often been stated that rim spacers are illegal in Australia.

Cheers.

Ken

Chining in again,

Everybody probably uses these sites to assess wheel and tyre impact from standard. but for those that haven't seen it you can put in your current wheel & tyre confirguration and then what ever comb you are considering and it will show you the impact

The following post by Les Harris is not in the syncro files section, so I'm posting it below.

Cheers.

Ken

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Wheel rims and ET offset, by Les Harris

To measure the offset, take the wheel off the vehicle, lie it on a smooth flat surface with the inside uppermost.

  1. Put a straightedge over the top of the tyre then measure and note the overall width from the underside of the straightedge to the floor.
  2. Measure and note from the underside of the straightedge to the surface that mounts to the hub.
  3. Halve the overall width (1) and subtract that from the measurement to the mounting surface (2).

That result is the offset.

This would normally be done without the tyre mounted to the rim but you will get a sufficiently accurate measurement to give a close approximation of the actual offset.
