Speedo/Odo

The odometer stopped again so I pulled the panel out again to find that the spur gear had again travelled along the odometer shaft and out of engagement.

This time, it was in much better light than before and I could see why.  There is a hairline crack through the gear which reduces its grip on the shaft, allowing it to ride outwards and out of engagement.  As an interim fix, I will try some Loctite if I can find some. My stock is locked away in a colleague’s workshop until 10 Jan.

But I have a problem.  Phill says that the 2WD speedo is different so this gear is likely to be different also.

The gear is 12.4 mm diameter, 2.0 wide, has a 6.0 wide boss and has 10 teeth; the spindle is about 3.0 diameter.

Does anyone have an old Syncro speedo that might yield a gear?

Les

Les,

I have had a few speedos repaired over the years which was probably the same problem. Instrument repairers just made new gears from brass. They never failed a second time.

The strange thing was that the imperial odometers never failed, only the metric. Spins 1.6 times faster?

Phill,

Thanks for that.  I will look into that option.

Les,

There is a number on the front of the speedo which may indicate the ratio.

2WD KMS will be 500
syncro KMS will be 1000
syncro MIles will be 1600

Don't forget:

2WD miles will be 805.

Possible you can take the gear out of a Golf or other VW product which has a similar #. In miles it's 1575. There must be a corresponding KM version.

Ben,

For the moment, I will try Loctite as an interim measure while I follow up Phill’s suggestion of getting a brass gear cut to match.

Best of luck, Les.

The clock is only hitting 12am in 20 minutes here. Have a half dozen dancers on stage much younger than any Syncro I own. I better get back to the business in ringing in the new.

Happy New Year again, everyone!!!

Happy New Year Ben! It reminds me of a flight I took to the West Coast on Jan 1 quite some years ago. I celebrated New Year's Eve on Sydney Harbour, then took a 2:30pm (or so) flight with United ex Sydney and the crew of course celebrated New Year's on the flight (more than once if I recall correctly!)

And yes, our Syncros are all another year older, and the dancers seem yet another year younger.

Happy New Year.

Mark.

Les, I stripped the 2wd mph (805) speedo I have and the cog has 16 teeth. Is it posibble that a 2wd kph speedo would also have 10 teeth? Greg E
