Speedo

Reposted from a reply to Ben Tan:

Ben,

When I pulled the panel out, I found that a spur gear had moved along its shaft and disengaged.  The gear is nylon and is a push fit; it has no retainer.  I pushed it back into engagement and the odometer now functions.

Most of the replies suggested that the speedo is driven at wheel speed and is not related to the gear ration of the diff.  What I have not done is check ETKA to see if there are different speedos for different gear ratios.  Following your prompt, I will do so.

Best wishes for 2011 Ben and thanks for the many valuable contributions that you have made to the group over the years.

Sent from my now-functioning odometer.

(I have just looked at ETKA and it shows only two speedos – one in MPH and one in KPH.   I am not entirely sure about this but Phill holds all of the several versions of ETKA that we use.  Phill, can you add anything to this?)

Les,

A recent discussion started on the Vanagon List got me thinking to revisit this thread.

Apparently, the speedometer drive is matched to the gear ratio. It would interesting to confirm this via differing part numbers.

Les,
Very useful info re finding the displaced spur gear.

So when it is said, "only ever reset the odometer when vehicle is NOT in motion otherwise the odometer may malfunction" and having now inspected and made your discovery, do you feel this displacement of the spur gear may prove to be the root cause of a typical odometer malfunction? It's an interesting and valuable point, I'm unaware anyone has ever discovered nor reported findings on this issue. Also, do you feel then that with some tinkering with bits and pieces, one could create/fit a retainer. Is there space?

Cheers.
Ken

Ken,

Yes, indeed I have several times pushed the reset while the vehicle was in motion and this would arrest the mechanism while the cable was still driving it.  This could well have induced the gear to move outwards along the shaft. This tendency would be accelerated if there was even the slightest wear on the teeth which could provide a ramping effect.

One of the Loctite range would probably provide enough grip so long as the reset is not used while traveling.

Les,
Excellent finding and I'll remember this for the future. Live and learn eh.

I love the following simplistic instruction found in the user manual:

"The trip recorder can be zeroed by pressing the knob in the speedometer dial."

A shame they didn't expand on that and add an appropriate warning as well.

Many many years ago (maybe about 12) I fixed mine with Loctite Quick Metal press fit repair. Been working fine ever since.

Still got the little tube here, might as well throw it out as it has gone hard.

Hi there,

Just got back from a trip down the Mornington Peninsula. For us Melburnians the new Peninsula Link has just brought it a whole lot closer (Northcote to Balnarring in a whisker over 1 hour with zero traffic lights).

The speedo thing seems to be catching, though, as despite recent good behaviour from our Syncro the speedo died while down there. Just wondering how to determine whether it's the cable that's gone or whether we need to replace the whole unit. Sadly I realise that these are Syncro-specific parts.

Thanks for your thoughts,

Francesca.
Is it the speedo or just the odometer.

Normally if it is the complete speedo it is just a broken cable or drive gear.

Phill

Hi Phill,

Good point. It is both the speedo and the odometer, suddenly and without warning.

Are the cables just the regular T3 ones? I assume so.

Thanks,

Francesca.

Hi Les, wonder if this one is the Super Syncro out of Freemantle, can you remember?   Few years ago it changed hands almost new at the time.... Hart

I suggest actual visual inspection and real diagnosis before searching for a part.

the right thing to do is, unclip the speedometer cable from the back of the speedometer ..
and with the front wheels turning ..
look at the upper end of the cable and see if it's turning .

if it's not, I'd undo the bottom end at the front differential ...
if the drive gear is turning there..
it does sound like a speedo cable all right.

I see a lot of people 'decide' what part could be faulty and get that part as the first step ..
which often leads to you getting the wrong part, or one that you don't need, or not all the parts you need, etc.
