Starter malfunction.

Hi all,

I am traveling down from Byron to Melbourne in my ex telecom syncro.
Yesterday the after pulling up at a servo north of Sydney I got no response from the starter motor. I have ignition power as I can hear the idle control valve humming. Plenty of battery power.
I'm not sure if I have a starter solenoid issue or ignition key issue or something else.
Does anyone know a simple way of determining this. I have tried tapping the solenoid with no success.
I am driving from the blue mountains today down towards Melbourne. Is there any mechanics along the way anyone can recommend.
Cheers

Paul,

Given that you are travelling, the battery should be near top state of charge.   If the solenoid us not reacting at all – not even a click – it suggests that it is a signal circuit issue and the usual suspect is the ignition switch.

You can test the solenoid by shorting out the solenoid terminals with a hefty screwdriver.   If this activates the starter, then the problem will be with the signal wire.   Starter switches do eventually fail, usually because of decades of grot accumulating in the switch.   Not a few Syncro owners carry a new spare ignition switch for this reason.

One option is to find the signal wire on the switch, pull the leads off and touch them together.   This often gets you going.   You can let them hang loose until you get home; just use a bit of insulation tape on the active lead.

Many decades ago, I was one week into a three week camping holiday in a T2 (same ignition switch) and had the same problem.   I fitted a new wire run and a momentary-on switch to the solenoid and this got me through the rest of the holiday.

Paul,

They are still in stock.   I bought one in the last year.   And the reason that they continue to be in stock is probably an indication that they are a steady seller!

Just pull the bottom cover from the steering column and you can unplug the connector from the switch. Just plug the switch in and turn it with a screwdriver until you get time to fit it properly.

You can buy a switch from VW dealers or any VW specialist or any VW wreckers as they fit nearly every type of VW from the 70s to the 90s+. Carry a spare and try to buy a German one if possible.

All,
If only for the reason of self preservation, I'd suggest all syncro owners carry a copy of any issue of the VW magazine "VW Magazine Australia". It's the first thing to check for adverts of any local VW parts/service business near to where you may be stranded/delayed/passing anywhere around populated regions of Australia. I wouldn't leave home without one.
Cheers.

Paul,

Not off the cuff but it is the same for the two wheel drive and there were no changes over the life of the T3 that I know of so just go by model year; it doesn’t need a VIN.

Paul,

Just Kampers have one for the T3 which has the Just Kampers code of J10171. I think they are around $17.00. My after market one cost me about $22.00 but it works well so far.

My mechanic installed a new one on mine when my syncro was playing up a bit and he said he needed to remove the steering wheel to do it?? Apparently you cant get to all the bolts to access the ignition switch without removing the steering wheel.

Anyway - it has completely solved my problems. Worth every cent.

Cheers,

You can't remove the switch without removing the steering wheel but you can remove the plug and plug it into a new switch and leave it hanging underneath until you get home.

Phill,
Yeah, why not indeed. We need a half decent Australia wide list for the inevitable breakdown far from home.
When stranded, any VW business might help, even if its a fellow VW nutter offering local knowledge.
Cheers.

I had a switch melt down in the back blocks of NSW last July. Caused by
lights on high beam for too long I think. A local auto guy set up a hot wire
system for me with a switch and starter button to get me going. I have kept
all the wires etc and made a diagram of which wire goes where. It is quite
easy to hot wire even without a starter button.

I got a switch from VW in Port M but it took three days to get here. I
installed it and you definitely have to take off the steering wheel but it
is not a complicated operation. By the way the switch from VW cost $80!!!!!!
It will be after market for me in the future.

Peter,
You should buy this 3 part kit then for eliminating high current through the ignition switch (starting) and high current through your headlight switch. Problems permanently solved.
Be the first kid on the block in Port to have em!
Cheers.
Ken

Thanks Ken and Phill. I have this work on my “to do” list as I then want get some of the newer headlight bulbs so I can actually see the road at night.

Cheers, Peter

Phill, Pete from Port,

I suppose its quite possible some of us auto electrical challenged syncro owners may have headlight and/or spotlight relays/circuitry already installed somewhere in our vans by a previous owner and we don't even know it. I've not yet had reason to try to find out, especially as the last time I looked, the backside of the headlight switch looked and felt quite normal i.e., uncooked.

I suppose initially a mentally challenged person could carry out a rough check by flipping off the instrument cover during a night trip and switch on the high beams and spotties together for a while, then feel for excessive high temp on the the backside of the switch. Then decide whether or no to do anything.

I'm thinking that the fundamental difference between your solution (headlights only, not starter solution) is the time and effort to fully comprehend and then go about tracking down all the specific components needed to make up just the headlights kit, whereas the Samba link supplies headlights AND starter solutions PLUS full instructions for auto electrical dummies, all delivered to a home letterbox. With the dollar predicted to go to $1.10 in the foreseeable future, the Samba solution seems increasingly attractive and convenient.

Then again, maybe I've missed something, which is quite possible.

Cheers.

Ken

Thanks All

On Saturday:
I called VW and Daniel there couldn't find my VIN, after the advice from the forum I told him it was the same starter switch from all T2's and 3's from 70's, 80's and 90's.
He told me they one in stock in camberwell for $65.
I remember reading that switches were around $15 but thought I'd grab it seeings I was around the corner.
When I got the switch in my hand I instantly knew it wasn't T3.
Sure enough it wasn't, the correct part they wanted $75 for and nil stock was available in Melbourne.
I pulled the plug off the starter switch and pulled the black with green stripe wire out to start to determine what each was.
After plugging the plug again the car started.
Albeit without accessories power.
I replaced the wire and it started again.
Amazing what a jiggle can do.

That night I received a call from a blocked number around 8:30 pm and the guy said he heard I was looking for a starter switch and told me he had the good German ones for $55.
I asked how he got my number and he said he was a friend of Michael O'connors?
He told me his name was Andy but when I said I'd call him if i needed it as a friend (Andy Sinclair) was seeing if he could get a switch from one of his spare cars, he wouldn't give me his number.
I appreciated the offer but also felt it was all bit odd not to offer a number.

I haven't had a problem since.
Andy Sinclair kindly pulled a switch off one of his spare vans, just in case I have problem again on the way home.
I met up with him last night and checked out his 2wd caravelle.
Bit jealous of those captains chairs and electric mirrors.

Thanks Andy

Peter,Ken,Phill,

In regard to getting brighter lights for our Syncro's, I didn't want to cut into the wiring set-up. I installed 2 heavy cables direct from the battery to
the front of the van near the lights and installed 2 heavy  duty relays. I use the existing light cable to operate the relays, works fine.

Cheers, Theo

Here is a ready made kit from traxide that does that.
