My starter has died. Time to upgrade. Has anyone installed the new Gowesty one. Not the hi torque one. The new one for sale. Seems like a good replacement and it’s also smaller. The only issue I am worried about is the copper coloured bush that is pressed into the bell housing. One reviewer said he had to use the old one.

Was not aware they even made these Peter, so cannot comment. They do look nice.
What was the issue with the bush? It’s always a good idea to replace these with a starter motor change. Why did they need to keep the old one?
Have you looked to get your original re-built?
Depending on what is wrong, they can be re-built, often only needing new brushes, clean armature and new bearings.
In general, starter motor replacement in a syncro is a horrible job…made even worse with a syncro with rear diff lock.
The high torque starters are smaller in length than the factory and I think that allows easier fitment, yet I haven’t done one for a long time as my syncro uses the small car bell-housing and Subaru starter which fits in great!
Yes Scott. On a Syncro it’s tricky. Bentley says to undo CV joint and also take off the diff lock actuator. It’s much easier in a 2wd. I have find someone in Port who can do it.
The Gowesty one will be an improvement and much easier to fit.

I rebuilt my starter when I had the engine/GB out a few years ago.
If I had to do it again, I’d probably lower the engine/GB a little and remove the diff lock for access.
The Gowesty starter is in and works a treat. The mechanic had a hell of a job getting the old one out but says the new one was very simple to install. It’s smaller but more powerful. So all good so far. Cheers, Peter
