Starter Motor HTS-MT for Vanagon 4WD

All,
My query to GoWesty last night elicited the following reply together with a 14Mb pdf file syncro installation instructions.

Given the size of the file, Yahoo Syncro website will not accept the attachment, so I cannot provide it to you through that medium. So for anyone interested, may I suggest either you enquire from GoWesty direct for a copy of the file or else I can send it direct to you, assuming your email facility can handle a 14Mb file.
Cheers.
Ken

Subject: Starter Motor HTS-MT for Vanagon 4WD

Hi GoWesty support,

Please advise whether or not the above starter motor is compatible with a Vanagon 4WD vehicle that is equipped with a rear difflock.

Given the extremely close proximity of the rear difflock actuator and its mounting bracket to the original Bosch starter motor, I'm thinking perhaps this new starter motors different shape/profile may interfere with and so prevent the refitment of the difflock actuator and its bracket and so lose its functionality.

If you confirm they are compatible but first requiring some degree of modification to enable fitment, please advise what if any alterations need to be carried out either to this new gear reduction starter motor installation and/or the difflock actuator and its bracket.

Thank you for any clarification on this issue.

Cheers.

Hi,

When I installed my Go Westy Starter, the mounting point instructions were very clear.
They were easy for a non mechanic like me to follow.
There were 2 different positions for the mounting bolts to be positioned.
One for 2wd and one for Syncro, you must follow the instructions supplied to the letter or you will stuff it up guaranteed.

It was easier to get the new starter in than it was to get the old one out
Very happy with the Go Westy starter..

Hi Rowan,
Sounds encouraging ... especially for DIYers ... thank you.

I assume you first needed to remove the bush from the bellhousing entry to enable fitting the new starter. It isn't mentioned either way in the GoWesty starter install instructions.
If so, is that a simple task? Does it require special tools or some other DIYer technique to accomplish bush removal?
Cheers.
