STARTER MOTOR

Hello to all.
Just some info regarding Syncro Starter.
Have some intermittent trouble with my starter since I bought a 91 DOKA
Syncro last year. Tried to find an exchange unit and also looked for
parts and tried some Auto electricians - found nil in AUS - only option
was to purchase new unit for quoted AUS 700.00 + or remove starter -
send away for repair while car is U/S.
I found someone through e-bay in Berlin and after confirming that it
will fit my Syncro (existing PN VAG 09191123B replacement VAG
09191123 ) I placed an order and 10 days later it arrived, is re-
manufactored with new parts except housings and covers, same dimensions
as the B type but more cranking power, it fits the Syncro and has one
year warranty. Comes with Computer generated test data - all parameters.
Total cost was Euro $ 143.00 delivered to my door.
Included was extra Euro 20.00 so that I did not have to send the old
core back and freight DHL Euro $ 38.00.
Great deal! and I have a spare when I fix it.
If it is not an 'old hat' - the person to contact is:
gerdmarquard@web.de
sevice and e-mail response is excellent!

I can now get on with my upgrade to a rear locker diff and de-coupler
(when I get it)

Klaus,

This is very handy information, particularly since the supply of starter motors is becoming progressively less and less.

Thanks for your input.

Gday Klaus and ALL,

Sorry but am I missing something here? When my starter motor
malfunctioned a year or so ago, I simply handed it to my local auto
electrician to overhaul, had it back in about 2 days or less. Hasn't
missed a beat since. There was no need to seek out a new or
reconditioned unit. Isn't that what most of us do? Cheers.

Ken

I was thinking along the same lines Ken. They're just a normal Bosch starter.

I am told that the Syncro starter has a different offset (mounting) to the 2WD starter but I would have expected that the innards would be the same.  If so, there would be nothing different in the coils or armature and could use 2WD parts and should thus be serviceable.  I will get more information and post it but it won't be before late next week.

I was thinking along the same lines Ken. They're just a normal Bosch starter.

In the US, rebuilt starters by Bosch are between $150-$200 (USD) exchange (or core charge). Syncro starters are the same as 2wd. The only starter that is differences are between gas (petrol) vs. diesel. Aftermarket rebuilders charge about $50 less.

Guys,
I had to replace the started in my Syncro recently, I used a normal 2WD starter and it works fine, and looks the same as the one I pulled out.
