Starter motor,

Hi, after the recent clutch inquiry i successfully installed the new clutch with the help of my dad whom is a passionate Syncronought.
Now since we are working on the car we were thinking of getting the starter motor overhauled and refitted.
Is there a place that we could go to with the part or should we stuff it and get a new reduction gear starter from GO Westy?

Thanks,

Jens
Hi Jens,

I have the GoWesty gear reduction starter and it is excellent.

I had a problem with my starter after going through salt water (see video). it was the fifth crossing that killed me.   VW Syncro river crossing at Pebbly Beach NSW 2013

I purchased a reconditioned starter from eBay which gave me no joy it was as useless as the old one.

I then bit the bullet and punched the gear reduction one and have had zero problems and a much better starting experience than ever.

Hope this helps

Cheers

I am considering the GoWesty one! It seems like a solid peas of mechanics, do you have a rear diff that you needed to work around? I have one and would like to keep it of cause-

How long did it take to install?

Thanks for your reply,

Jens

Yes I have a rear diff lock.  They provide clear instructions on how to rotate the mount plate to allow for the diff lock.

They also provide installation instructions that were of great assistance, I installed it myself can't remember how long it took but half a day should see it in.

I have the instructions provided if you're interested I can scan them and email them to you.

Cheers

Hi Peter, all very interesting what you say. My starter motor is sick for more than 10 years despite being ' overhauled' several times. Would it be possible for you to copy me in with the instructions ?? Would really like to see what I'm in for. Suppose would be good practise to lower the gearbox as the d lock actuator has to be removed and the rest of it.....
Many thanks and Best Wishes for 2015 !!!

Hi Hart,

Will not be on the Gold Coast as we are starting a 3 week trip to Melbourne and back. The weather looks worse down south with all the fires.

I will be testing the Cruise Control unit I have just installed. Go-Westy unit with original T3 indicator/cruise stalk source from UK. I have had it in for a week and seems okay. This will be a good journey to trial it on, so keep an eye out for VWI989 on the roads down south.

PK

Peter, holding great hopes that you stop here either o/n or for a coffee and small talk.

G'day all, happy New Year.

It isn't necessary to lower the transmission to replace the starter, but it's a lot easier to remove the diff lock actuator if you remove the CV joint first.

It's a good idea to grease the CV's anyway, and check the integrity of the CV boots, so it is a good excuse to do both jobs at the same time, and check your rear wheel bearings and brakes as well.

Bugger of a job without a pit or a hoist though ...

Hi Peter,

I've purchased the same unit . Where did you mount it and did you need to extend the cable to deal with the right hand drive accelerator ?

Mark
