starting problems

My 2.1 motor has recently started getting difficult to start cranking for up to 20 seconds. It does start eventually then runs rough for 30 seconds. It idles fine. When I take off it loses power and I have to give it more revs to stop this happening.  Once warmed up it doesn't miss a beat, I can stop and start it no problems.

All this started getting worse when the battery went completely flat if that helps.

Does anyone have any ideas for my issue?

Thanks Greg N

Oh yes one more thing when it starts it blows a heap of smoke for a little bit from the exhaust. Greg
Hi Greg
Mine blew black smoke. On my recent trip to Valla it became so bad that i had to stop . After a 10 min brake i could continue and made it to the event.
Back home ir started again , i replaced about all that could be replaced. Finally i opend the AFM and sprayed the inners with CO electronics spray cleaner
hoping for the best. That was some 300 ks ago and she never missed a beat. Also my starting difficulties are gone.
Hope that you find a remedy for yours and keep us in the loop please.....Hart

If you talking black smoke it sounds like a leaking injector. You need to pull the fuel rail with all the hoses and wires still connected. Place a piece of white paper under the injectors and cycle the key to get the fuel pump to run. If you get a drip at one or more pintles send all 4 for cleaning / testing. Gregor

Thanks Greg and Hart. Question Greg If it was a leaking injector would it come good after the engine warming up? Greg N
So what happens is the injector is leaking whilst the engine is switched off. It leaves a pile of unburnt fuel in the inlet. The engine is way over fueled to start initially, once some fuel clears and the plugs dry it fires, burns off the remaining fuel (black smoke)and will then run fine until it is left to cool and leak.

Thanks Greg that makes sense. Greg N
Not long ago mine starting running terribly intermittently, then became almost undriveable.  Would idle but no power and a lot of black smoke leaving soot on the driveway.  Trouble shooted with mechanic buddy couldn't find anything.  He randomly pulled off the vanagon syndrome fix cable, said it looked a little dirty, sprayed with electronics cleaner thinking there was still something wrong, went for test drive to try and trouble shoot, problem fixed no problems since.
Solved!! I can highly recommend a new set of spark plugs works wonders after 90,000km of running.

Yes obvious really

Thanks for everyone who helped along the way. Regards Greg N

Haha, I guess it's nice when it's the little things :)

I recently replace the rotor button in my distributor, was not causing an issue and was only by chance I even opened the distributor. As everything else was all good (leads/cap/coil etc) I had never bothered to look inside. The rotor however must not have been replaced with the rest, it was very cracked and the insulation was all falling off and the tip was badly worn!
