Statement of Purpose of this Group

Notice to all members:

I have been far from well for the last two weeks and one particular subject has grown considerably in that time, a subject that should have been reigned in earlier.

The purpose of this group is to provide a technical advice and support resource for owners of the T3 Syncro to assist them in keeping them on the road and serviceable.  Implicit in this is keeping them in their original design configuration.

It was never the purpose of this group to also include extensive modifications to the T3 Syncro.

The recent topic on the transplanting of a modified Subaru engine and gearbox into a T3 Syncro is a long way outside of the purposes of this group, particularly given that:

  • it is essentially a two wheel drive modification
  • the very large and very active SubaruVanagon group has existed in the US for a very long time

It is accepted that traders can promote their wares on this group so long as they identify themselves as traders.  It is not acceptable for a trader to enter into log discussions (via posts) on the development of a two wheel drive system for the T3.

Anyone interested in Subaru transplants will find a goldmine of information here: http://autos.groups.yahoo.com/group/subaruvanagon/

Dear Les & Members,
I can only assume what you have written is aimed at me and my long answer to a question posed by a member yesterday.

I have to say, I am thoroughly disappointed at your comments and hope it is not a true reflection of how the majority of your members feel.

The most amazing comment by you is that what we offer is essentially a 2WD T3 conversion. This shows your complete lack of understanding. The Subaru driveline is an AWD/4WD driveline and the Subarugears conversion simply reverses the drive. It was initially developed and tested as a 4WD solution for my 4WD Meyers Manx. It is in fact cheaper and simpler to provide the AWD solution to customers than it is to do the 2WD conversion. The T3/2WD conversion only came about at a later stage once we developed the 2WD locking spool and method to shorten the transmission.

I have only posted to the group as we have developed a specific AWD replacement for the Syncro in response to the incredible demand from Syncro owners worldwide for a solution that will keep their AWD/4WD Syncros on the road. We are showing this at the VW nats that was posted about by one of your members. My post was both appropriate and relevant to your group. How silly of me to think that might be of help to some of the group's members.

Nowhere did I mention a Subaru engine conversion. Our transmission bolts up to VW aircooled and watercooled engines with the adaptor plate and matched flywheel developed, so customers can keep their beloved VW engines if they choose to do so.

I won't bother posting to this group again. Good luck with keeping your syncros on the road and trails.

If it keeps my Syncro alive since its long in the tooth... Then we should be open to new ideas. It's nice to see some one working from our home soil....Subaru gears that is.

Hey Les
I too am sorry I aired my Thoughts re auto flip shift 4x4 gearbox for the old Telstra van.
Please accept my apology and I will be more careful in future to air my thoughts on the correct forum.
Was just reminiscing about my old hang gliding trips up mountains all up and down the east coast in my old unmentionable 2wd VW auto mountain goat , Still cant believe how good it went for a 3 speed
At least it was the right colour Ken

Les,I wish you a speedy recovery.

But can I say that I am a little confused to your statement of purpose.
Todd's research and development with transplanting Subaru gearboxes into VWs has been welcomed with open arms within the VW community.
I spoke with him years ago when the idea of a full AWD system for a syncro was just his pipedream.I congratulate him on his advances.

I understand that an non-lockable,non g-gear transaxle and front diff doesnt appeal to everyone(myself included),but it gives others who want another stronger, long term option the choice and I dont understand why his work cannot be mentioned on this forum, which we know was set-up to provide technical support to syncro owners helping them keep their vehicles going.

Secondly, years ago when I started researching installing Subaru engines into these Buses, you put me onto the SubaruVanagon site, which helped me enormously, when it came time for me to install my engine,I PM you and asked you if it was alright to do a log on my install.I was concerned that the information I was going to post would not be welcomed on this site. You replied and said something along the lines of that it was going to be great information for the members on this forum to keep these old vehicles on the road, which was your intended purpose. So I did a thread of my install and downloaded photos. Now you say this sort of information is not welcome.????

Surely I am not the only one who is interested in reading about any maintenance or modifications to these old Kombi's that we all love.
Regards
BenC

Hello Les,
Agreed. Thanks for the timely reminder, which, on occasion, has been directed at me! Argh!

All I can think is that perhaps newer members have unfortunately missed your ongoing intent till now. I say this because ever since 2006 when I first joined, it's been my understanding that for yourself as owner/moderator, what you have stated below concerning your intended purpose and direction for this forum is quite correct. In particular for the T3 syncro as it came from the factory and to support it actively via this medium since 2004, and at your own cost.

I also recall that in that time there have and still are a terrific range of talented syncro members who've volunteered their time and syncro specific knowledge here to assist other members wanting to learn ... please please may it continue thus.

Les I wish you a speedy recovery and good health into the future.

Cheers.
Ken

Ben,

In this, I am treading a very fine line.

I am aware that some owners, when faced with a terminally ill MV engine, will see a Subaru transplant as a viable alternative.  A number of members have done this and have achieved satisfactory results, you amongst them.

Yes, the intent of the group is to offer technical support for owners of the standard T3 Syncro.  My view of alternative engines is still much the same – if a transplant is the only viable option, I can’t condemn it.  Beyond that, where does one stop?

Yes Les,you are right.Where does one stop.
After market wheels and tyres,upgraded suspensions,bigger brakes,bigger cvs,modified driveshaft,poly bushes,up-graded headlights,straight shaft vs vc,which fridge is better,solar panels,etc etc,the dreaded decoupler even,it wasnt standard.
I see all those modifications no different to the beforehand mention topic of Subarugears.
If you love syncro then this is the place to talk about it,right?

Peter,

The T3 Trakka camper conversions were approved by VW Australia and could be ordered in any VW dealership to be delivered on a new T3.  They carried a VW Australia new vehicle guarantee.  I own one, in fact.

Hello Les,
Ok then, hope it helps us all understand your purpose more clearly from now on.

Of course I do recall back in 2006 and after, members then being brought to heal for being "off topic" more regularly, me included.

Got me thinking & surfing the net and was shocked to discover the home page edicts on the Subasync site ... makes your revised home page purpose statement look a tad wimpish. Check this out by comparison ...

CONTRIBUTIONS/BEHAVIOR: Discussion is LIMITED to the topic of putting Subaru engines into vanagon type vehicles only. Do not post about other engines, other vw vehicles, tires, or general vanagon restoration. General Vanagon discussions with no Subaru content, while valuable, belong on other Vanagon sites!
This Group is strictly moderated. Only post questions and responses that will benefit the Group at large. "Chat type" conversations between individual members and off-topic, or non-informative posts will be deleted at the discretion of the moderator. NO flames will be tolerated.

Les I'm thinking you're good to go and revise your own home page purpose statement ... match fire with fire! HA!
Cheers.

Cheers.

Ken

I wonder if they allow posts about Subaru gearboxes?

RE: [Syncro_T3_Australia] Statement of Purpose of this Group

Hello Les,
Ok then, hope it helps us all understand your purpose more clearly from now on.

Of course I do recall back in 2006 and after, members then being brought to heal for being "off topic" more regularly, me included.

Got me thinking & surfing the net and was shocked to discover the home page edicts on the Subasync site ... makes your revised home page purpose statement look a tad wimpish. Check this out by comparison ..

HA!
Cheers.
Ken

Ken,

Due to ongoing problems with prospective members ignoring the instructions on the home page regarding joining, I cut the text to the absolute minimum in the hope that the membership process might become more evident but it has made no difference. Only about two out of every ten follow the instructions.

I have restored the statement of purpose to the home page text so that there should be no misunderstanding of intent.

Les

Ken,

Thanks for finding that and posting it.  I was beginning to think that I was being draconian but I see that I am complete wimp by comparison!!

When I acquired my Syncro in December 2003, I spent a lot of time on the Internet accumulating information.   It soon became evident that there was no Syncro representation in Australia apart from Phill’s excellent website and a very occasional mention on the Kombi forum. The big US Syncro Yahoo group had a register, so I pulled out the Australian addresses and began sending out a newsletter; from memory, this was Feb 2004.

The original intention was just to put Australian Syncro owners in touch with each other but it became clear that there was a need for a dedicated web group so I set up the Syncro_T3_Australia Yahoo website and put it on the Internet on, from memory, 4 August 2004.

At that point, it didn’t have any purpose other than establishing contact but a purpose quickly evolved over the next few years and it became a much needed technical support and advice resource.

It thrived and we acquired members aplenty but I had made a fundamental error by leaving membership open to all without any form of vetting.  About four years ago, it got well out of hand and the open membership had drawn not a few very unsavoury types, from hairy trolls to convicted crims, all anonymous.

I pulled the plug on the entire membership and required everyone to re-register and provide full personal bona fides.  This got rid of the trolls, crims and dead wood overnight; the group, whilst a lot smaller, was much enhanced and considerably stronger as a result.

The technical resource aspect appears to have worked well and we will enter our tenth year in August.  As you often mention, the number of Syncros will only ever diminish.  Given that most people want to keep their Syncros in good running order and in original configuration, a need is being filled by this group.

I turned eighty a few days ago and I won’t be around forever but the need for the support that this group provides to Australian Syncro owners will, if anything increase.  It certainly won’t decrease.  I think that the current formula is serving this purpose well and I intend to maintain it as it is.

Les

A grateful thankou to you Les and all members who have helped me technically with owning my beloved Syncro over the last 4 years.

My family and I have been to amazing places with this vehicle. Owning and keeping it running without the help I recieve from this group would not have been possible and for this I am very thankful. "Long may it run" Greg
