Subaru conversion

Howzit everyone,
Day 2,well into my Vdubaru conversion and I have the wbx and transaxle out.
The RJES bellhousing is fitted to the VW transaxle with the modified VW cross shaft, that holds the Subaru release bearing and RJES release bearing adaptor via VW retainers.I still use the VW clutch slave and brackets.
Tomorrow this will bolt to a Subaru EJ25,from an Aussie 2000 Outback.I bought it with 105k kms from a wreck, motor, full wiring harness,ECU,key and barrel.
I have changed the timing belt and idlers and water pump, also the rear main and rocker gaskets and plugs.
Already fitted is a RJES reverse coolant manifold to except the cooled water the in the right direction, relocating my header tank up in the right hand front of the engine bay(where the VW airfilter is).
Torque is transferd from the big Subaru flywheel via a VW 228mm clutch plate with a Suby pressure plate.
A suitable diameter pilot bearing was selected.
The engine already boasts a Small Car engine carrier, with new VW engine mounts with the VW moustach bar that is positioned about 2 inches back from standard.New holes have to be drilled for this. The VW bash bar can still be used, after I lenghten it the 2 iches.
The Smallcar shortened aluminium sump tucks up nice and low.
There is 12 wires in the whole Subaru car wiring harness that runs the motor. There is 4 in the petrol VW harness. These are joined via the Suby immbolizer system so that the Subaru ECU,relays, immobilzer, fuse box are under the rear seat(the same as VW ECU).The 2 speed fans are also controlled by the ECU and there is a speedo driven vehicle speed sensor.
The gases are pushed thru Smallcar stainless headers,hi-flow cat and big muffler.
Finally after almost 2 years of research,I am starting to get this thing happening.Very excited.
Hopefully drivable next week,stay tuned...
I will post more photos when time provides, check out the ones that are already in the photo section.

.......rNr crof-T........
Well done Ben.

Keep at it - that will be a mighty vehicle when your done.

Does this motor need to run on 95 or 98?

Or will it run on the 91 stuff?

Cheers,

Skot

Skot,I think it runs on 95,will check that.I dont pay for my fuel ,so even the WBX use to get 98.
Day3,I had some new coolant pipes made up today as the original VW ones were damaged on the ends,an exhaust shop bent up some copys of the plastic ones, and cut them in two for easy install.I painted them black killrust.
I pulled out all the VW engine harness and ecu and relay then installed the modified Subaru engine harness,no ties as yet.The Suby ecu,new relays, immobilizer, data link connectors and a new fuse box is under the rear seat.
The engine and transaxle was lowered on blocks under my bus on a hoist. The one of a kind rear bumper bar and tow bar was removed as new mounting position of the VW moustach bar is further back. Some mods are required on the tow bar mounts so I can fit it again.Raising the engine crane and a jack under the gearbox, the assembly was guided into place, where the gear box is bolted up first. After centrering the engine mounts ,engine cradle and moustach bar new holes were drilled as the engine bar is further back.Raised the hoist and tighten everything properly.
Tomorrow, hopefully will turn the key...see how it goes though..

Howzit,
Day4, no vroom, maybe tomorow if not Monday, need to get some p/s hoses made then.
New 4 piece cooling pipes up and away. The VW header is relocated with a new bracket which uses the two VW airfilter locators and screws into the right hand side of the engine bay.Because the VW and Subaru engine cooling and passenger heating systems flow in different directions, a heater by-pass valve is required so that the engine doesnt overheat without the heater/s on.It is two tees joined with hose. One end to the header then to the heater, the other from heater to engine. It allows the correct coolant flow to match the VW radiator and heater/s so everything works properly without cooking ya goose. All plumbed up with moulded hoses.A real good and simple cooling system, without all the non available plastic, and all the other hoses.(what were they thinking??).
By the way I have a very new VW cooling distrubution block, which is obselete now,and many other parts For Sale.PM me if you need something.
Smallcar stainless header which points the exhaust the right way was installed with ease and bolted up and fitted snug under the RJES bellhousing. The Smallcar standard replacement 2 3/4 stainless muffler is bolted from rear of the engine carrier waiting for the 3-bolt flanges to be welded up(hopefully Monday).A Dynoflow hi-flow Cat with a port for the O2 sensor also needs its flanges.
Clutch is bleed and feels good.
A couple of wires to connect, tin ware on and a bit of tidying up tomorrow.
One of the Kids is crying,no its both of them ,the wife been yelling at me for a while now.I need a beer.
Up at sparrows fart tmorra.

Great work Ben.

Be careful with the power steering hoses. Apparently they like to squeal if you are using the Suby power steering pump - I think they pump too much pressure?

Mine is a VW power steering pump that has been fitted to a doctored bracket to run the VW power steering as it was - no squeal.

I saw quite a few posts about this and Small Car apparently sells a special hose fitting to sort this out. See how you go with yours first.

Once your done make a video and put it on U-tube - or even better -come for a drive up to Terrigal! You can even bring the family.

Cheers,

Howzit,
Day4, no vroom, maybe tomorow if not Monday, need to get some p/s hoses made then.

Scott,no I didnt get that email???
The conversion cost me about 10 grand. The engine, ecu and harness cost $2500.The parts are cheaper but with custom charges by the time I drove it about 10g,I bought everything that I could. In the States people are doing it for cheaper, but I believe that if you want to do it properly this is approx what it will cost.(bellhousing, reverse manifold, allum sump).Remember,I did all the labor myself, all up 14 days.I did quote a customer of my Dads $5000 labor to install ej25 in his 2wd T3.
Alot of the parts came from Smallcar(US),some from RJES(England),I bought the bellhousing and a shortened sump second hand from Yurik(WA).I still have the shortened sump.I also got Richard(RJES)to do my wiring harness,I would definatley recomend this. This involves stripping the harness and sending it to him.
All of the parts fit together like they should, the only thing that I had to make myself was extending the bash bar 2inch,moving the engine back is no trouble.Shopping online with both SC and RJES was easy, did it all by email, the parts took about a month to recieve.
Replace the plastic cooling pipes with steel ones.
It is alot of money, but worth it,I have no regrets.

Ben,

With my engine in no go  mood and my patience fast running out. I have a few questions for you:

1) How much do you think the 2.5 suby conversion cost you and where did you get your bits from?

2) How long did it take to get the parts from the US?

3) How much did you need to fabricate? i.e. engine mounts - cradle relocation etc.

4) Did you have any issues with getting a shortened sump as the sumps on the 2.5's are massive.

Any other issues I should know - bits I would need.

I'm sick of spending good money on an old technology engine - may as well put a VW donk back in than keep throwing good money at this 6cyl suby lump.

Parts for this thing are also a bastard to get.

Anyway I will source the dizzy from Ben T and hear what you say about the conversion you did before I make up my mind.

I almost did this last time I had a problem when my timing belts broke and I couldn't get parts for 3 weeks then.

Anyway, let me know when you get a chance.

Cheers,

Scott
