subaru conversions

Hi guys just curious as to who is running subaru engine and where do people have their conversions done if not done themselves. I don't have time to do it on my own. I only know of custom vee dub I found in the links here. Is a decent drive from adelaide though. Also is most of the clearance regained with a shortened sump. Anyone have pictures of the conversion? cheers.
Erik,

There is a Yahoo group called Subaruvanagon and it has a prodigious wealth of information adding a Subaru engine to the Vanagon / Syncro.  A number of our members are running Subaru engines and the most favoured seems to be the 2.5.  I think most have done their own conversions.

They have a huge data section.  Get into that and you will probably get answers to most of your questions.  Your membership of this group gets you into that one, so you can become a member of that group also.

Hi Melbourne based Syncro folks.

I have a single jump seat that I want to get rid of, before i put it out for the hard rubbish collection next week does anyone want it?

It is a single seat on a box with full brackets to mount through the floor. The brackets make it fairly quick to remove.

It was supplied fitted to my camper conversion but i'm not using it and it doesn't have any provision for a seat belts but might be useful to someone. Fabric is very 1980s but it is all sound and could be recovered

Pics attached. Contact me via list or at numbers below.

Cheers

Erik I paid for my conversion in sydney - at the time it was about double the cost of putting in a reconditioned vedub engine. The engine runs well and certainly has a bit more oomph than the original. The sub is not shortened and is a bit low. I took it out on first outing on return from Fraser where it had also dragged a lot in sand but now have a bash plate they put in for me that does the trick. If you want to talk to the guys in sydney I can give you the contacts. They've done quite a few since mine which was in turn done on back of them having done one personally. However it took a long time. I'm having a slow coolant leak problem but don't think its to do with the subi.

cheers

Nigel

Hi Erik - try here - these guy are very professional.
They offer everything u need including a modifed LOOM that is neat.
I have even purchased the fron and rear audi vented disc brake conversions from them too.

A lot of the work once you have teh Key parts from these guys - any one can do including you.

If i had my choice id go for the 2.5 SOHC flat four. I opted for the 3.0 Ltr Six - but the syncro tranny just aint up to that but the 2.5 is OK.
2.2 are too old and so is the 3.3 (based upon the 2.2).

Additionally Erik you can get a adapter bell housing from Richard in teh UK - he is a great guy (this allows u to retain subaru f/wheel, starter and clutch and throwout bearing.
here is his link

here is a picture of my motor - The rjes bellhousing is here.

If you need advise on purchasing stuf from teh states just give me a hollar

Hi Gary,

Does the seat have a "swivel" built under ? I dont require the seat but the swivel would be very useful. Is it possible if you dont get a taker for the whole thing that I could pay you to post it over to me here in Denmark  WA.

Well, I don't know how much of a help this is but I have a 2.2 EJT in my 2wd Vanagon. This motor is not a good match for a Syncro because the turbo is in a spot that gets in the way of the plastic Syncro tank.
I'm actually in the US so no help except for maybe sourcing parts. I am but a phone call away from Hobart Kennedy (KEP Engineering) who popularized the Subaru engine in the US. Smallcar & others are the Johnny come lately of the genre. The have improved upon original kits. For example, vendors such as Martercraft in San Barbara, California sells shortened oilpans with modified dispticks. The give you about 2 inches on clearance back which is lost in the conversions. The Smallcar engine carrier and ones carried by Mastercraft make the bottom more sanitary than the engine carrier offered by KEP. All these guys rely on the KEP adapter plate of something similar. The ultimate IMHO is the bellhousing from Richard Jones as mentioned elsewhere in this thread.
As less has mentioned, join the SubaruVanagon List on YahooGroups. The forum is moderated by Warren Chapman who lives a short drive away from me. There are lots of photos in the group site.

Ahhh... you guys would be wanting one of these. I have three of the pedestals for US$150-US$175 each depnding on condition. They sell for upwards of $350 in the US with a seat on it. Any front seat will fit the box. The swivels are the same ones used on the Westfalia campers. There is locking box uder the seat. Shipping to OZ is ridiculously expensive (from the US) because of weight. As you can see in the attached photos, there were track covers available in the Westfalias that these came on when the seat was not in use.

Bent, I have already bought the bellhousing, clutch kit and cross-member from richard jones but the rest I will source here. I didn't want to go the adapter plate route for obvious reasons which last time I checked still seem to be used in australia. Had a look at smalls cars site and was very impressed with their level of involvement and experience in subaru-vw conversions so I will definitely keep them in mind should I need anything in the future.

Hamish, My choice of choosing a subaru engine has less to do with a gain in power as it has to do with parts availability and reliability . So long as I'm not taking a step backwards in performance over the 2.1wbx I'm happy. Will look for a 2.5. Cheers,

erik

Hi Erik,

I put a 97 EJ2.5 in my Syncro by myself a few years ago, making most of the components.
This lost about 50mm clearance, but made some up with 15" wheels and the motor is well worth the loss. You are welcome to have a look at it as I am in Hackney - my phone is 0427951719 ,
