Subaru reversed transmission.

Hello all,

This may interest some people...  www.subarugears.com  manufactures a reverse cut ring and pinion to fit a subaru transmission and engine into a VW Syncro etc. It seems they also supply mounts and just about everything else that could be needed to fit them including fully rebuilt trans with the reversed ring and pinion. Not sure about diff locks though. Definately worth checking out further.

Cheers, Andy Sinclair.
This is great news. As wbx and 094 parts get harder to get its good to know there is a complete engine/trans alternative. The thing I don't understand is none of the ratios match the syncro, are they expecting you to run larger rear tyres? Greg E

fwiw,
there was just a massive back and forth of a dozen to 15 postings on the syncro yahoo group I think..
all about this  reversed ring and pinion for a Subaru transaxle.
many pages  paragraphs by the guy who builds them ..
lots of conversation there , like 4 days ago.
Might find that interesting to check out.

Andy and Group, this Guy had a stand at the Nationals this year.At that time he hadnt built a box for a Syncro. He told me that he would do away with the VC and a locking diff was not an option. He is a very cluey guy.He has sparked much interest in aircooled VW owners of late, recently fitting Subaru 5 speeds to Beetles(VW and Subaru powered).Very nice work.

Does he do a front diff?
Tailshaft?
4WD controls?

This would be a big project in a syncro. I can see the benefit in a 2WD, but a syncro would be a headache.

now I'm even more confused about what you mean.
I get the part about using a subaru front diff in a syncro van with the reversed subaru R $ P  gearbox..
but wonder what you mean by 'take the syncro out of syncro.'

I also wonder if subaru transmissions are up to the load and stresses a syncro will put on the gearbox.
- cause it's a lot, even in normal use, in my opinion.

exactly..
either the 'new' reversed subaru R & P has to match the syncro front diff ratio exactly..
or as was suggested...
fit a matching ratio subaru front diff.

the whole point is to use a subaru transaxle...
the easest way would be to use a R & P ratio that matches existing front syncro diff ratio.

I must say too, there is a world of difference between 2WD rear engine VW-based vehicles, like dune buggies and sand rails, even Bugs ...
and the AWD of a syncro.
the loads and stresses in 2WD gearbox are not much at all I don't think, compared to what a syncro gearbox has to deal with.
I don't think the syncro gearbox is actually that robustly build originally.   Could use something stronger/better there for sure.  If the subaru gear box is that well made, great.

the forces and loads in some sycnro vans are just huge, in the drivetrain, in some driving situations and how people use syncro's, especially hord core off road.

It is certainly an interesting project but I notice that it doesn't work with the Subaru box with the low range either only the standard manual box so wouldn't be much use off road. Not that the Subaru low range is really a proper low range anyway but with the weight of a van it might help.

Make a fantastic 4wd "Beetlru" though. Now that sounds like a car for Australia...

Hey Phill, when I spoke with the man,he was very interested in a Syncro to play with.I suggested a very nice blue T25,that wasnt at the nationals, but I dont think the owner would be interested.

Scott,as far as I am aware,Syncro,Quattro,4 motion or what ever Porsche call it,is,their viscous coupling AWD system.
Is that correct?
If so then,a full Subaru gearbox, front diff, drive shaft,no diff locks is not that ledgenary AWD system that has definatley proven its point since the 80s(and before that)and beyond,we call Syncro.
I agree with Phill,great news for T3s and aircooled Kombis,Beetles,Type 3s,Karman Ghias,Bajas and Manx,VW or Subaru powered,street/race,but massive job on a Syncro.
His gearboxes were originally for Subaru powered Volkswagens, but recently has done some prototypes for aircooled Beetle owners, who are very interested.(and they should be!)
As far as stress in the Suby gearboxes and loads, you wouldnt know.
But you do remember Quattro.
