Swing out wheel carrier/ Nissan Terrano

I seem to recall a post somewhere that a nissan terrano swing out wheel carrier will fit our syncros with minimum modification. Apparently they are readily available from wreckers quite cheaply. Anyone fitted one? Thanks Bill.
I have only heard of the old pathfinder ones being used. Mostly because the cast iron corner hinges were a similar profile. The tubular steel gate tends to be very heavy and long. If you go this way I would recommend reinforcing the inside of the quarter panel and ditching the gate. Greg E

Agree with Greg, I started to go down the Pathfinder route and they could definitely be made to work but they weigh about 30kgs due to being so ridiculously overbuilt. The top hinge almost matches perfectly but the bottom one needs a lot of metal removing and the profile is wrong for the shape of the T3 and would need a bit of packing out or a shim making up and yes definitely some reinforcing inside the body. Ok if you have time but not an easy job and they would always be a bit heavy.

Make that a LOT of reinforcement!  The body panels need to have the load spread out a very long way to avoid deforming the panels.  I think that it is the Gary Lee carrier that had a full length reinforcement inside the rear door frame; that is properly engineered.

You are very correct there Les.

My Garry Lee spare wheel carrier has fantastic reinforcing to spread the load of the very heavy spare wheel.

I have had mine for around 4 years now and it is showing no signs of damage to the body of my syncro despite driving down some very nasty roads plus the off-roading I have done.

I would only use the Gary Lee carrier, but second choice as a cheaper alternative would be the Bernd Jaeger type. Steve Muller has one of these for sale.

Thanks guys for the feedback. I enjoy improvising and saving some cash at times but this time i'll look at the professionally built carriers. Sounds like i could easily end up with a heavy ill fitting monster that could damage the pride and joy. Thanks again. I'll give Steve a ring next time i'm in Sydney. Bill
Here is the one that Steve has for sale (if he still has it).

If you're at Nambucca someone could bring it up for you.

Hi Phill, believe Stephen Muller has got his Camperize Camper 4 sale as I can remember it is fully loaded , it had a 2.5 Oettinger engine installed.

When talking to him last he mentioned that he wanted to sell his Syn DOKA too, might be interesting to someone looking for a Syncro.

Probably worth a look at our archive photos "T3 Rear wheel carriers"
I remember posting the original Nissan Terrano Carrier suggestion which simply passed on the posting from another forum that someone had found this carrier suitable for a T3. I think it generated some discussion at the time. I agree about the weight it has to bear which in my case is up to 2 x16" wheels. I have always been very careful not to just let it swing open under its own weight  but when I lent it to someone it came back with a slight crease in the body work. Fundamentally however it showed the strength and good design of the original equipment VW hinges.
