Sydney VW mechanic?

Thanks Ben

Much appreciate your input.

I was under the impression that a Syncro was a T25 and a T3 is a 2wd.From my quick look on google it looks like the Poms and Irish know the Syncro as T25.The rest of the world T3 Syncro,no mention of Australia

And the Yanks call them Vanagons. Is that right Ben T?

Micheal, since I havent meet you,I wasnt for sure that you had a Syncro,as I know that there is some group members that have 2wd T3 or T2's or other VWs for that matter.Just trying to help you out, thought you may have a torque convertor problem(if you had a 2wd auto, lol).
Would be interested in listening to your pots and pans.Something there is making the noise.

What type were the diesel engines?

We called Golf Mk1 the Rabbit here. I believe they were A1's in Germany. VW used diesel engines from that series as well as the Mk2/A2 in our Syncros. That makes my 1989 Syncro 16" a Type II T3 w/ an A2 turbodiesel engine. Of course, I've upgraded to a Mk3/A3 AAZ TD.

Some alphabet soup that is, eh?

Ben,

Yes, indeed!

While I was writing that, I also had in mind the fact that I once owned a 1972 Type 2, T2, with a Type I 1.6 litre engine, which I later replaced with a 2.0 litre Type IV engine . . . but I thought that the waters were already muddy enough!!!

Les,

You forgot to mention the wonderful world of VW engine types.

Type II T1 had a Type I engine

Type II T2 did as well until they stuck a

Type IV engine in it in 1972

Type II T3 started w/ the Type IV

            before getting the WBX

It's my understanding that some T25's can be had with a Type I engine.

The nomenclature is quite confusing.   From the outset, VAG used “Type” to distinguish between their model range:

  • Type 1 = the original Beetle
  • Type 2 = the original Kombi
  • Type 3 = the two door sedan and wagon range
  • Type 4 = the successor to the Type 3 (but not sold in Australia that I know of).

It got complicated when the curved windscreen Kombi replaced the split windscreen Kombi.   Whilst VAG applied a new model number to the curved screen Kombi, it never really caught on and it was generally referred to as the T2.   When the T2 was replaced by the T3, the same applied.

Phill has a good knowledge of all the VAG models and will give you/us the correct information.   It comes down to VAG applying the word “Model” (I think that the T3 is in fact the Model 25) while the rest of the world pursued the illogical path of referring to a Type 2 (Kombi range) as T2, T3, T4, etc.

(There was never an auto Syncro.)

and the T4 is a Eurovan.

What about Rabbits, Dashers and Foxes?
The only problem is that Transporter and Type begin with the same letter.

Type 25
Transporter 3

I have a cat test pipe if you wish to borrow it while you are here. That would eliminate it 100%.

Vanagons, yes. We can them that. Except the elitist Vanagon AWD owners. They just call theirs 'Syncros'.;-)

Ben,

You forgot the Porsche 912E. And remember that the 914 wasn't really just a Porsche in Germany. VW-Porsche if I remember correctly.

How about the Porsche B32? Is that still a T3? Only 2wd though.

hi..
a 'normal-traditional'  912  Porsche is a 911 with the older 356 type  4 cylinder engine.
< but see further below >

the 914 has the Type IV volkswagen engine. ..first seen in the 411 and 412 VW sedans ..
which are like 'superized Squareback VW cars'  sort of.
Then  Type IV vw engine also appears in the VW Bus ,starting in 72, carbed , going to fuel injection in 75 and then up to the 82 ( or 83 ) in the T3  Vanagon.

there IS though ..a 912 with the same engine as the 914 ..
that's the one-year-only 1976  912E ...
here's a blurb on it

some of the author's words -

"The 1976 Porsche 912E was a one year only vehicle produced to be an alternative to the 911 enthusiast that wanted a cheaper and more simple vehicle. There are many stories of why Porsche did this, and basically I don’t care why they did it! The minute I saw a 911 body with my most favorite engine from the factory, the type 4- I wanted one!"

Hi Les,

The 914 used various permutations of the type 4 engine. The earlier 912 originally used the Porsche 356 engine (similar to the VW type 1, 1600cc 90 or 95hp). The 912 was discontinued after a few years, but later re-introduced with a version of the 2000cc type 4 VW engine. None available as Syncro’s though.

Brian.

Took the cat off, visually looked through the unit in which I noticed the honeycomb pattern still intact and then physically shhok the unit and detected no noise or rattle. What does a cat test pipe do?

I have a cat test pipe if you wish to borrow it while you are here. That would eliminate it 100%.

Les,the 914 was a VW/Porsche that came out with a few variants of engines. They were all mid mount flat engines from 1.7l,1.8l,2.0H4 and 2.0H6 it was produced between 1969-1976.It was originally built to take the place of Karman Ghia(what type are they??).
From what I understand the 912 had either a 1.6l or 1.9l from the 356 which I believe were VW engines.

Replaces the cat. It's just a straight pipe. Then you take it for a drive.

the 356 engine in the first 912's isn't quite a vw engine ..
I'd say it's a porshce-fied vw-derived engine.
definitely not 1.9 liters.
1.6 most likely,   and earlier 356's had less displacement than that I believe.

it's the 1976 912E that had the  VW Type IV engine that the 914 also uses.

Les,

No need for me to elaborate when others already have.

For the record, I have seen a Syncro with an air-cooled Type 1 engine. Clearly not original as there was a lower grill present up front.

Ben,

My memory isn’t as good as it used to be.   Did the 914 and the 912 share the same engine?

Porsche 914.

There is a small diameter metal water pipe mounted on the body above the water filler tanks. Mine rattles as it is connected to a small hose to the engine which is too short. (Next to the oil filler)

Just another thing to look at.
