Sydney VW mechanic?

Taking a couple of days off to visit my daughter in Sydney. Can anyone recommend a good T3 mechanic to look into this continual rattling sound in my bus, if my mechanic hasn't solved it by then.
Will be up there this coming weekend. Staying in Randwick, public transport to and from would be an advantage.

If the rattle still's there I'll just have to plug in the ipod as the car runs well and play and audible book for the journey.

Michael

Steve at Kombi Rescue may be able to have a quick listen. Not convenient to leave your car there. I'm close to the M5 if you want to call in and i'll have a quick look..

While you are in Sydney, the 4WD and camping show is on. 30/4 until about 6/5.

Micheal,I have all next week off and would be willing to have a quick listen to your ongoing rattling noises if you desire.PM me if you go to Phills or if you want to come over to my place.
Have you driven the car with the engine lid off whilst someone sits in the back?

Thanks Ben, Phil and Bob

Ben, the answer to your question is yes. I drove whilst the mechanic sat in the back with the lid off whilst I went up and down the road. Right now the car is with my mechanic in Pambula but with this long weekend I won't know how he went until Wed when he returns. I've always thought it was metal on metal, but after checking and correcting any possible 'tin' contact points he believed it to be in the ignition and hall sender, But now he's inclined to think it's the AFM which he was in the process of locating last Wednesday. So until then I'm not quite sure of my movements until I hear from him. Where about are you Ben? Phill where is that camping show you mentioned?

Micheal,I doubt that the noise you have been describing will be the AFM or the Hall effect sensor. If there was something wrong with these components then the vehicle is likely to just stop running.
Are you sure you are running the right fuel?
I am assuming that you have checked your ignition timing.
Could this noise be leads or dizzy cap arcing out?Have you replaced the leads and cap and rotor?

Ben
It's a 91 T3 Syncro thats why I'm in the group and I don't think theere are any auto syncro's out there. I agree with you about the AFM and the hall sender. The mechanic has been all over the car and cannot see any metal on metal rattle, but to me thats what it sounds like. Brian Reed and many on the Shallow Crossing meet heard this sound, but after finding then eliminating what was thought to be the culprit various nuts and pieces of tin attached to the main engine block (part heat shield around exhaust), the noise was still there.

About two days before this noise was first noticed, I crossed a river with a very steep approach and slightly less steep departure angle. On the departure the rear end bottomed out on the ground/rock with a loud bang. Got out to check for damage, nothing visible, put it down to the tow bar bottoming out on the steepish departure angle. Brian is of the opinion that maybe the engine mounts may have been knock out of kilter setting up a possible vibration/tapping/knocking sound. This sound is not present with engine idling or cruising along at say 75kmp along the flat, but as soon as the engine is under load in come the pots and pans. Get to the top of the hill and coast down or put in the clutch or put her into Gods gear and noise gone.

Hi Michael,

Could this noise be coming from the catalytic converter?  If some of the ceramic internals has deteriorated and has cracked and become loose, it could produce this noise corresponding to any exhaust fluctuations.

One would need to remove the cat and shake it to test this out.

Micheal and group,I dont think there is any auto Syncros(worldwide)Definatley not in Oz.
I was under the impression that a Syncro was a T25 and a T3 is a 2wd.From my quick look on google it looks like the Poms and Irish know the Syncro as T25.The rest of the world T3 Syncro,no mention of Australia.Phill, help us out what should we be refering our Syncros as in Australia.T3?? or T25???
Micheal, since I havent meet you,I wasnt for sure that you had a Syncro,as I know that there is some group members that have 2wd T3 or T2's or other VWs for that matter.Just trying to help you out, thought you may have a torque convertor problem(if you had a 2wd auto, lol).
Would be interested in listening to your pots and pans.Something there is making the noise.

T3 and T25 are the same.

T25 stands for Type 25, the model designation when it was on sale. My syncro window van is a model 254. Note that the part numbers start with 251 ... ...
T25 is really the correct name.

T3 started when the T4 went on sale ('91). Transporter 4 or the 4th generation of Transporter.

Similar with Golfs. The A2 Golf ('85-'91) is a type 19.

The nomenclature is quite confusing.   From the outset, VAG used “Type” to distinguish between their model range:

  • Type 1 = the original Beetle
  • Type 2 = the original Kombi
  • Type 3 = the two door sedan and wagon range
  • Type 4 = the successor to the Type 3 (but not sold in Australia that I know of).

It got complicated when the curved windscreen Kombi replaced the split windscreen Kombi.   Whilst VAG applied a new model number to the curved screen Kombi, it never really caught on and it was generally referred to as the T2.   When the T2 was replaced by the T3, the same applied.

Phill has a good knowledge of all the VAG models and will give you/us the correct information.   It comes down to VAG applying the word “Model” (I think that the T3 is in fact the Model 25) while the rest of the world pursued the illogical path of referring to a Type 2 (Kombi range) as T2, T3, T4, etc.

Micheal and group,I dont think there is any auto Syncros(worldwide)Definatley not in Oz.
I was under the impression that a Syncro was a T25 and a T3 is a 2wd.From my quick look on google it looks like the Poms and Irish know the Syncro as T25.The rest of the world T3 Syncro,no mention of Australia.Phill, help us out what should we be refering our Syncros as in Australia.T3?? or T25???

Les,

You forgot to mention the wonderful world of VW engine types.

Type II T1 had a Type I engine
Type II T2 did as well until they stuck a
Type IV engine in it in 1972
Type II T3 started w/ the Type IV
            before getting the WBX

It's my understanding that some T25's can be had with a Type I engine.

Hi Yurik.

Tanks for the comments but the cat has checked out OK. Those at the ShallowX meet thought that was definitely the problem, but it aint.

Hi Michael,

Could this noise be coming from the catalytic converter? If some of the ceramic internals has deteriorated and has cracked and become loose, it could produce this noise corresponding to any exhaust fluctuations.

One would need to remove the cat and shake it to test this out.

Ben,

Yes, indeed!

While I was writing that, I also had in mind the fact that I once owned a 1972 Type 2, T2, with a Type I 1.6 litre engine, which I later replaced with a 2.0 litre Type IV engine . . . but I thought that the waters were already muddy enough!!!
