Syncro + boghole = stall

Hey All,

Out having some fun on the weekend in a little boghole:
http://samarnold.org/colo/boghole.mp4

However once through I turn around and the syncro stalls. Some
backfiring and very rough idling, won't rev over 1200rpm then stalls
during the attempts to start her again. Wouldn't even kick for a
little while. Occasional black smoke. Wondering what the on earth it
is; water splashed all the way up to the engine hood though didn't
seem to get near the dizzy. She must have dried out 20 minutes later
and then drove home fine.

So two questions;

1. Any idea what made her stall (where did the water get to??)

2. What do I need to do so my syncro can do this:

Thanks guys,
Sam

You need a lot of sealing technology if you want to do this with a
WBX. These guys drive mechanical diesel engines, toyota 3CT i believe
having read somewhere... air intake up high and bellhouse sealed off
should do it then. The mechanical diesel's elektrical equipment can
take a bath or two, doesn't hurt very much. Critical might be the
starter, but it can be sealed aswell. Other than that: Let the Turbo
cool down before you hit the water and never ever let the engine stop,
as the cooling engine will virtually suck water through the exhaust
pipe. No fun to get it out and clean in the middle of nowhere...

Ciao,

Martin

Gday Sam,

Nice boghole Sam. Methinks you're just asking for trouble! .... haha

Clearly there are a miriad of reasons why our syncros malfunction when
we least want them to.

The same as I asked Mark last week about his malfunction issue, have you
had the free VW 20F3 recall rectification done on your syncro? The
symptoms as you describe them remind me of it.

VW 20F3 RECALL DESCRIPTION

Problem: Malfunction of fuel injectors on 1990 through 1991
transporters.

Defect: Moisture ingress in the electrical coil of the fuel injector may
cause it to malfunction.

Consequences: This may cause the engine to misfire or stall.

Correctice action: Replace the fuel injectors and associated fuel lines,
connectors etc.

So Sam, maybe the simple remedy is: Don't drive hard through bogholes!
... haha

Cheers.

Ken
