Syncro Brakes

Dear All,
I was recently talking to a VW mechanic who has fitted 4 wheel disc brakes from the T4 VW to his two wheel drive T3 transporter.
He is very pleased with what it has done for him.

Does anyone have experiencing this modification on a Syncro.
I'm particularly interested in what the mod will do for hand brake descents down steep rough hills.
Stock drums are only just adequate for the job and need to be kept well adjusted.

Peter

I've got the small car 4 wheel disc kit and i have found that they are no where as good as stock drums ( from a hand brake point view ) because the pad contact area and force applied are both greater with the drum set up.

Hamish / Peter,  I fitted Audi A4 brakes all round ca 10 yrs ago. While I am happy with the foot brake, the hand brake is
nowhere acceptable and I wonder how on Earth it passes the test every year.
I read somewhere that the VW Roxon (converted by SEIKEL) is refitting the rear with drums because of holding on steep terrain.  Hartmut

I just live with the fact my Syncro might become my second boat one day at boat ramp.!

Hey Guys , Just thought I would add that my NM Pajero has a rear discs with a small drum brake machined into the hubs ? of the discs used only for the hand brake. Not sure why they went this way but my guess is its hard to apply enough pressure to a disc pad over a long standing period reliably. Could be worth exploring if there is other drum disc combo that could fit the old Syncro.
Another hand brake type is a drum on the tail shaft usually found on trucks etc ?

Thanks Hartmut, and thanks for raising this one Pete,

It is possible, Oettinger make them.

I have Oettinger disks all round on my 2WD Porsche powered Caravell.
They have a small drum on the rear brakes for a hand brake.
It is not very effective.

Oettinger had them listed for our Syncros when I did the "Bergmeister".
I presume they are still available.

Problems I had with Oettinger were:
1. Stock wheels would not fit so I had a set of Simmons wheels made up.
2. The studs are easy to knock into the hub when putting a wheel on,
you have to be really careful.

For these reasons i did not explore using them for the Syncro.

Peter

I have never understood the need to replace the rear drums with discs. I find when reconditioned properly they work great. The only thing I wish VW had done was vent the front discs.

I found the drums can get sand in them and or rust up internally if beach driving alot and or mud bashing.

The stopping power of the bigger vented front brakes coupled with a larger BMW booster is much better.

I fitted the bigger front disc for improved front braking and rear reliability (from sand n mud issues).

It also made sense to improve the rear braking efficiency at the same time.

Sure my hand brake has never been as good but I've never let it bother me.

I prefer safer braking especially with big OD tyres now.

I have Oettinger discs on my doca , I agree with the stud problem in that the knurling on the stud is too small for it to lock into the disc properly I had new studs made by a shop in Sydney with a larger diameter this overcome the problem with the stud turning when undoing the wheel nut.

The offset on the wheels is different with the oettinger brakes fitted different wheels where fitted by the previous owner, the spare is the standard steel rim but a spacer plate has been fitted for the different offset.

The hand brake works perfectly

I understand that pads are no longer available for the units but one can have the original units fitted with new pads

Stick with stock drums on the back, Audi discs up front.

Best combination and big improvement on stock.

Thanks Bob,

I'm interested in knowing the contact details for the engineering shop that made the new studs.
