Syncro - Cape York

I have been instructed (by the Mrs) to get the Syncro ready for a Cape York Trip.

Whooohooo.

I just checked out VW T3 Syncros to Cape York Australia

and I am guessing that all I need to worry about is the basics a/t's new shocks and prob springs while I am at it. a winch. rear wheel carrier new belts and water hoses including ss pipes.   I have all the recovery gear from my 80 series Landcruiser so all good...

I was thinking I'll have to do something about locking at least the rear diff but seeing that Bay window get up the my unlocked Syncro should do OK.   We'll be going with a modified '75 series v8 diesel landcruiser" so there will be support...

Just one thing I am a bit concerned and that is "fuel" I am guessing I'll have to carry so extra fuel for the trip. thinking of putting some Jerry cans on a roof rack of the camper.

Anyway I thought I would mention this on the site in case anyone have any advice to offer...

Cheers

Just a few thoughts based on when we did the Cape in the Syncro.

We did not need to carry fuel.
There were enough towns and service stations on the way.
We had a tour guide, so we never considered worrying,
but plan your trip so that you take them into your plans

Don't do it in the "wet" as there are a number of river crossings.
We did it in August/September.
There was one river crossing on stone with large pot holes we had to avoid.

If you drink real plunger coffee, take more than you need, because when we needed some we could only find instant.

Hope tyhis helps.
Peter

Hi Peter,

That's pretty exciting!  It's an awesome trip.  I wish I could go again.  Make sure you leave enough time, we only had 2 weeks and was a little bit rushed.  There is heaps to see up there and the more time the better.  We carried 4 jerry cans but I don't think we actually needed them and the T2 only has a 40 litre tank and with the big tyres and stock diff ratio only had about 200km range.  We did fill them a couple of times but I can't remember that we actually needed it.  Didn't get a flat either so didn't need the extra spare wheel we carried all the way up and back.  Good tyres are a must.
Diff locks are great but we didn't have one so I don't reckon you will need it either.  Support of another vehicle is important no matter what you are driving, without it everything is a lot more scary and remote.   We went in late May and rivers were not too deep, mostly. :)  Terrain is not overly difficult other than the deep water crossings and corrugations; need good shocks,

Neil.

Sounds like a fantastic trip.

Love to come along but life gets in the way.

Enjoy yourself and take loads of photos - particularly with the syncro in action.

Cheers,

Skot

Had no idea that a Syncro group was planning a trip so might go with Port Mac
mob, that is 2 Syncros and others , dont know how many. They intend leaving early
June 17. See how we go...
Have the Flinders on my bucket list too....would be in company of a De Luxe
2 lt tdi conversion. Just had the conv certified and got his blue slip. Took him 4
years.
