Syncro carrying & towing capacity

Hi all,

Would anybody have some official VW Australia documentation stating roof load capacity and towing weight limits for a bus?

Just want to know what's legal for a Syncro.

Thanks,

Richard

Richard. Don't know the offocial towing limit but just posted pic of my syncro at work this week towing a car trailer with small 4wd to my sons farm. Towed beautifully. Very stable. Bill

I can’t recall having seen roof load figures but Page 141 of the Owners Manual gives the following figures for towing:

Is there an on line version of the manual? I don't have one.

No.  I scanned my Owners Handbook when I first got my Syncro.  I will send a copy to you.

I have no doubt the Syncro can do more than my Bay window bus, and that has easily towed and carried on the roof more than most commercial vehicles will see in a life time. (went over weight bridge at the dump many years ago with a tandem axle trailer, total weight 4.7T). Driven sensibly you can achieve a lot.

My question however is more about what is legal, not what could be achieved. Have an accident outside of what is legal and your in deep p**.

Similar goes with modifications, you can do a lot and never be caught out, but have an accident and insurance/police will soon tell you what you should not have done and leave you with a hefty bill, or worse!

Richard

That would be great thanks!

Richard

Dear All,
I may have missed a similar contribution to what I have here because of what appears to be a problem with E-mails,
but attached you will find the relevant pages from the VW Transporter / Caravelle "Destruction" Manual which came with my 1989 Syncro.

Our T3s, 2WD & 4WD are fundamentally one tonne (960 Kg max) vans carrying capacity.
The roof load being limited to 100 KG.

Towing:
2WD 1500 kg with brakes
Syncro up to 2000 Kg.

For non braked trailers refer to State regulations, I think it is 650 KG.
Towing weights also depend on the tow bar manufacturer's design specs.

I also have towed a car trailer quite satisfactorily with the syncro, with one Tonne cars on it, but drew the line when I shifted 2 Tonne collectables and called a tow truck. The problem is when you are noticed by the authorities, for example after you have had an accident, because then they will weigh your load, look up their technical data, and throw the book at you.

An interesting aside:
When we fitted the 3.6 Porsche engine and G50 gear box to the 1982 Window Van with GL Caravelle seating, it was a bit tail heavy.
This was cured it by fitting rear Ambulance springs.
These compensated for the extra weight, I think it was about 200 Kg, while keeping handling etc., normal.

Hope this helps,
Peter

Thanks a lot Peter, that's a great help. I don't see the attachment for some reason?

100kg on the roof is not a lot, my nearly ready to install full length roof rack already weights 40kg!

Interesting on the 2WD 4WD towing, so what happens if you have a decoupler?

My tow bar doesn't;t seem to have a tag on it (It is a common one I have seen on other T3's though). Not sure if that's an issue.

On the load capacity, this is quite limited for a caravelle, I think it's only ~5-600kg. Put in 7 people plus luggage and that's easily exceeded!

The attachment is a pdf.
Do you have the Adobe reader ?
If not I can send it in another format.

Re: the decoupler, I'm not aware that they were an option in 1989 here in Oz.

Thanks Peter, yes can read PDF's fine, I do not see an attachment to open, so assume it is how I am viewing/reading posts.

I am currently logging into Yahoo groups and reading posts from there.

I am new to Yahoo, and not sure I have set it up right, or am viewing it in the most efficient way. I can see attached images by going to the "photo's" tab (or in files/attachments tab), but do not see them in the post either.

Is there possibly a set up issue with how I view the posts? (please note I login mostly from my PC, occasionally from a tablet)

Richard

Richard,
I don't know much about the detail of whether there is anything special about the transmission of e-mails through Yahoo.
My impression is that it is standard E-mail through a group account.
Perhaps someone else may have an explanation ?

Whatever, I've attached the two pdfs again.

Peter

I think that the towing weight is 2 tonne, but the problem is the rating of the towbar. Hayman Reese are only 1 tonne rated.
Thanks again Peter, sorry for all the questions !
I have looked through old posts, it seems I can open images and word documents fine, bit cannot open PDF files (tried a few posts with pdf's), and cant't open any
I can however open PDF,s that are in the files section

I am guessing it is something in yahoo when attaching pdf's to post.

Anyway, is emailing the PDF to me an option?
Thanks richars
Richard,

I should have done this earlier.
Have converted the pdfs to jpg.
Hope that helps.

Peter

Hi Peter, Richard and ALL,
For simpler viewing, I've rotated all Peter's pdf and jpg docs to landscape, find them all in attached zip file.
Cheers.
Ken

Much appreciated!! Thanks again for all the help.

Got the roof rack on over the week end, and given it a good work out. Made sure it was under the legal limit :)

Will have to post some pictures, it's just a locally made steel "tradesman" rack off a Hiace, with some mods is a good fit on the bus, and at 3.6m is longer than the roof. It will do for now, being steel is easy to modify and change around. Once I know what I need up there it will be a good template for a lighter aluminium one.
