Syncro from Denmark

Hi group

We have bumped into and camped with a family from Denmark who are
travelling the world in their Syncro.
It is a black and silver Caravelle with poptop and no less than five
pushbikes on the back. It is a 1.9lt tubo diesel engine which they
have just started to have some problems with.
The vehicle starts to loose power when approx. half the tank is used
and will eventually cut out. If they transfer diesel from there spare
tank to the main tank the vehicle runs fine again. It is not always
half tank, sometimes it can be only one quarter down.

They are in Kakadu at the moment and will be heading back to Darwin
in a few days briefly then down to Alice Springs. From there they are
not sure what direction they will take (Cairns or Adelaide).

Is there any Snycro owners in Darwin who could help out?

Does anyone know a Syncro/diesel mechanic in Darwin or anywhere else?

All of the basics have been checked already. They plan on joining
this group shortly now they know it exists and would happily meet
other members around the country (Dennis and Birgitte).

Any help appreciated
Andy
Andrew (& Melissa),

We have a member in Adelaide, Alf Anderson, who is not only a diesel mechanic but also a Dane!!

At this moment, midday Monday, I think that Alf is on his way to Melbourne from Adelaide.  He is coming to visit me while he is here and will contact me when he arrives, so I don't have a firm time yet.

Do the Danish people have a mobile phone, or at least an email address?  We need some means of putting them in touch with Alf.

Andrew,

Meant to add that this doesn't sound like a problem specific to the (diesel) engine but a fuel feed problem.  In this case, about the first thing that I would look at is the venting of the tank itself.  If the vent is obstructed, no fuel pump in the world would have enough grunt to overcome the vacuum that builds up in the tank.  I am not familiar with the fuel venting system in the 1.9 engine system but some of our European members do have such knowledge.  Mike Plompen comes immediately to mind.

A quick means of checking would be to run the vehicle with the filler cap not fitted.  There would need to be heavy cloth tied over the open filler pipe to keep out dust, of course.  If it runs with the cap not fitted, it is almost certainly a venting problem.

Sounds similar to the problem I had with my 1.6TD which was either air getting in to the fuel or deposits/dirt in the fuel filter restricting fuel flow. History of my fuel filter was unknown.

Changing the fuel filter and all of the copper washers on the return line then bleeding the system solved the problem.

There is a clear plastic line that runs from the engine back to the fuel filter. WHen the problem happened with mine, bubbles were visible in this return line.

Let us know how they get on.

This is the standard European spec JX engine that didn't make it to Aus. T3/T25s in Europe had it with turbo and without. The normally aspirated would be a challenge to keep moving i imagine!

Same engine from the early golfs. I think the 1.9 is non standard unless some very late vehicles were fitted with it?

I thought as Gary did about the 1.9 diesel in Kakadu, possibly the
fuel filter. Probably got a bit of crook Australian diesel.

Bruce
If it was outright filter, it could be expected to restrict flow no matter what level was in the tank.  Hard to say without seeing the system.

Gary,

Brings back memories!  I had a T2, bought with 99,000 miles on it and a 1.6 Type 1 engine.  Even a mild headwind was very noticeable.  I fixed that before very long by fitting a Type 4 engine that had 100 mm barrels and pistons fitted.  This brought the capacity to 2240 cc.  It breathed through a pair of double choke 48IDA Webbers and went like a rocket thereafter - well, that's a comparative statement, but it went from mobile chicane to quite respectable.

Your question inspired me to look up the power output

Mine has 70hp (51kw). It's good around town but runs out of steam at 100kmh.

Be nice if the Danes could join us all at DOVW, sounds like an interesting truck.

The T3 was out of production in Europe when VW built the 1.9TD (code AAZ) engines. The AAZ was a popular engine upgrade for the 1.6TD JX and 1.6NA equipped T3's in Europe. That's what I had done to my Syncro. The engine is mechanically injected.

Is it possible that the fuel gauge is inacurate? That is half a tank is actually empty or pretty dsarn near it? Have this problem with my recently acquired VW LT35. I thought I was getting fantastic fuel economy when the gauge hardly moved from "full". Apparently the fuel level sender had an obstruction at the halfway point.

Hi All

Well it has been a busy 3days, we have had the Danish family here ,we have done a lot off small jobs that needed to be done, they had old man emu shockers fitted to the rear, and they failed, but ARB here in Adelaide had to in stock, part no N37 @ $300. a pair, some electrical problems and general maintenance, they left today heading for the great ocean road. They would like to be in Melbourne for your show, but they also have to see some one in Sydney, after that they go New Zealand.

Regards Alf
it is always nice to see someone from denmark. we had a lovely visit and they where very nice people.
dennis was very grateful for the work that was able to be done in a nice safe backyard and not on the side of the road with a wife and three kids!

Does anyone know a Syncro/diesel mechanic in Darwin or anywhere else?

All of the basics have been checked already. They plan on joining
this group shortly now they know it exists and would happily meet
other members around the country (Dennis and Birgitte).

Any help appreciated

Alf and Kaye,

Sorry for the slow reply.  I have been bogged down with a number of things in the last several days.  If you are in touch with the Danish visitors, let them know where I am.  They might like to stop for coffee on their way through.

I am curious to know what was causing the fuel feed problem.  I expect that you resolved it for them.

It would be great if they could be at the DotVW.  We would certainly give them a prominent place in our display.

Hi Les

Now it is me that is running late with a reply, the Danish people had fixed the fuel problem with a new filter before they came, so that is all it was a fuel filter, and they had spares with them.
I am reading all about your day off the VW, hoping the Adelaide members know that we have our own show her on the 28/29&30 of Nov. at Port Adelaide, held by the Volks Enthusiast Club, maybe we can get some cars together here
