That works out to be about US$4900 at today's prices. Reconn boxes can be had here for $2500. Keep in mind we
are also importing geraboxes from Germany. California is about 6000 miles away from Germany or about 3600 closer
than OZ. Seems like a lot more money for the additional distance. I'm sure it has more to do with supply & demand
more than anything else.

It also has to do with purchasing power, as in importing large quantities as in the US compared with miniscule as in Australia.  These gearboxes were found by a local (non-official but long-standing) Volkswagen workshop, so he would have been quoted the over the counter price in Germany and have arrange his own shipping.
