Yep , it was me in the White Albatross park at Nambucca with all our camping buddies. Amazing that Joanne was there as well. Great spotting. Our paths didn’t cross though. Pity.

Nice drive up on Friday and great having my new instrument cluster working like a treat. A tacho and an odometer at last, fantastic!!!!

Then an interesting story. A guy drives in with a beautiful blue 1966 beetle. Short time later after he checked out his site, in he came in a huge Winnebago. Massive rig!!! He tows the beetle behind it. Of course we had to say hi and he was a guy well to many of you, Mark Harrison from Brookvale. Of course he knew Phill.  We talked VW talk for quite a while and turns out he even worked on Hart’s Tristar. He told me all about lots of work he has done, about engines, gearboxes, axles etc. and also conversions.

But then some wise words that he spoke like a sage from Star Wars.

1.         Must have a decoupler

2.         Always use 95 octane juice.

3.         Always use genuine VW coolant and change it regularly.

4.         Drive at 100 km max and always give you and the syncro a rest after 2 hours driving.

5.         Try and keep your machine original!!!!!!

Cheers, Peter from Port

I'ts a pity that Joanne didn't notice you earlier as she had to leave early Sunday morning.

I've known Mark Hammond for years and had seen Hart's Tri Star in his workshop many times. Mark and I went to the US in 1993 to go to a VW show in LA. He also did mechanical work for the Camperize guys, Chris & Richard and serviced the Geoff Ford white syncro Doka which was a made up Tri Star.

Limbach alone converted +- 5000 engines, a week ago they sold out to China. but there are countless others who convert them. They even do ½ Vdubs , cutting the engine in half for a 2 cyl outfit.

Crazy really, Ha

That’s very interesting. Someone in China obviously sees potential for ongoing and increased sales.

I know about the ½ engines.

In fact, I was the SAAA national co-ordinator for lightweight aircraft for many years but that’s another lifetime, another story.

No, my field was the early Ultralight categories.  This was at a time when the DOT was promulgating truly silly regulations but had no means whatsoever of enforcing them.  I spent years pointing out to them that they could publish truckloads of regulations but, because Australia was a three million square mile airfield for this class of aircraft, no-one was going to take the slightest notice of them if they were fundamentally silly or unreasonable.   I eventually gave up on them but, eventually, more reasonable regulations began to emerge.   That period cost me a lot of time, money and effort and I was glad to put it behind me.

Peter

You Went almost right over the syncro on the point at horseshoe bay. Marg and i both commented how wunderful it would have been up there on such a glorious day. Bill.
