Syncro newbie - Steve Atkins

Hi All,

As per the welcome request from Les Harris, this message is to introduce myself.

I am Steve Atkins from Davidson, in Northern Sydney. With a mate in the late '70s I used to drive a '76 Kombi flat out towing a sidecar outfit all over the eastern states. Apart from test driving a T3 Syncro when they were introduced, I haven't been in a relationship with a Kombi since. :(

Over the last decade I have owned and sold 2 Mercedes-Benz Unimog campers and our computer software business still looks after the Australian Unimog website for M-B.

Suffering withdrawal symptoms, I am downsizing and I am looking at buying a one-owner 1992 Syncro camper from someone I know. Steve Müller has looked after it for a long time and tells me it is an 8 out of 10.

My wife and I were at the VW Nationals last Sunday, sticking our noses in every T3 we could find, both 2wd and 4wd. There were some impressive vehicles there.

I am an information soak and love research. I have ordered a number of Kombi/Syncro books off Amazon, the workshop manual on CD, and am open to any advice that anyone is prepared to send my way.

I promise I won't ask questions if I can find the answer in the existing posts.

Steve
Welcome Steve.

Phill Lander (the god of syncro in Australia) who has the mid blue T3 syncro that won the T3 class has a few good CD's you will probably enjoy and you will probably love the Kombis to Kape tour video which someone can probably organise for you.

Steve Muller knows syncros very well and he will steer you to a good one.

They are still the best machine available for their purpose.

You will enjoy.

Cheers,

Skot

Welcome to the group, Steve. It's not likely for me to run into you in person as I am in San Francisco, California. Nevertheless, if you get a hankering to make your Syncro remind you of a 'Mog, I've got a pair of NOS sliding windows for a radio box and a pair on NOS 404 taillights. Olive drab, of course.

More importantly, you may find that Syncros can actually get out of their way on the highway at a slightly better pace than any stock Unimog.

Cheers,

BenT

Hi Ben,

Thanks for the welcome. My Unimogs were a U1300L and then a U1750L/38 monster so they scuttled along pretty well. I still keep a close eye on the Unimog community. We eccentrics have to huddle together for warmth.

Cheers
Steve

Thanks for the welcome Ben,

I think the asking price reflects the rating but Steve thinks it is a fair deal. No photos yet, The owner is about to leave for OS for a month or so and the decision is on hold until he gets back. Then we will take it for a weekend and will post the details.

Steve

Well done Steve.

Great researching skills you have.

Hope the syncro sale works out well for you.

Although always expect some maintenance as these things haven't just left the showroom.

Cheers,

Skot
