Syncro running funny

Hi having trouble with my 91 digifant syncro running funny, after about 1 hour of highway cruising @110kph outside temp around 23c, it started to miss {starved of fuel?} when i pulled over it stalled, no power the engine just shut itself down and woulndn't start. After a while it would  fire roughly for a second {with my foot flat on the throttle, shouldn't make any difference ive been told} but wouldn't continue to run. Eventualy it would start to run a little longer each time i kicked it over untill after about 15 minutes {not continue cranking} it started to run with very rich looking smoke coming out, roughly at first then smoothly and no smoke. I drove for another 20  minutes @ 80-100kph pulled up and it shut itself down as before. Left it for a few of hours fired it up, started straight away although a little rough at fiirst, drove back home 1.20 minutes @ 100kph  outside temp around 14c no problems at all , pulled up at home running fine. Now i notice that when i start it i have some rich looking smoke on start up and it runs like a choke being stuck on for a while. Oxygen sensor? i have no history in relation to these parts so don't now if its been changed at all. Does any one have any ideas?

Hi Phil

Check the output of O2 Sensor as follows. The sensor has two
connectors, one with 2 wires (this is the heater) the single
connector is the output signal. Remove the signal wire and use and
connect voltmeter to the output. Run the car and watch the output. It
should start at about 0.3 volts and reach 0.9 volts (or more) at
operating temp.If you dont have a meter, then replace the sensor. The
should be replaced every 80,000km (or thereabouts).

However I think yoiu have two problems.

Next remove all sensor connectors (hall sender, air flow meter,
coolant temp and coil connections) and clean with CO contact cleaner
spray.

Then remove all earths and clean with emery paper and CO contact
cleaner. Earth points are beside the coil, next to ECU (inside van)
and next to battery.

How long since you changed your plugs and leads and cleaned the Dizzy
cap contacts?

Now if you still have trouble then you have to look at the airflow
sensor. I think this fits with your symptoms.

Give me a response if you want to know hoe to check it.

Oh and check your oil and coolant just cause you should ;-)

regards

Peter

Oxy sensor voltage is 0.00 to 0.5 volts never stayed consistant was up and down so ive ordered a new one, should have it by tommorrow hopefully its the problem. If not i will move on with the vanagon syndrome capacitor I may even do it after this just to play it safe.

You can just disconnect the O2 sensor and it will run fine.
