syncro skid plate

Was reading a doka thread on thesamba and was surprised to find that the skid plate tire carrier under our syncros was an option rather than a given. Got me wondering how many of us actually have the skid plate carrier and who's got the standard clam shell. I have an ex telecom syncro with the skid plate carrier just to get started

Erik,

As far as I know, all of the Australian delivered Syncros came with the reinforced tyre carrier.  Phill and Steve will certainly know.

The skid plates was the first thing I noted was different when I was in the states,  looked funning not to see them.  The clam sheel just dosn't look right.

I have owned to Trakka syncros an 88 and now an 89 and the spare wheel carriers are different in each case. The early one I think is what you would call a clam shell a real heavy thing that was completely bolted up and this one is a flat one that hinges down after undoing one bolt at the front and releasing the plastic catch.

My UK spec van is even weirder, has a pressed metal skid plate that doesn't hold a spare. Just keeps the mud off the gubbins above.

Mine is an 88 model and it has the big bulky skid plate tyre holder which has never housed a useable tyre - unless I removed the central driveshaft or installed a decoupler as the space is too small to fit a 235 x 75 x 15" tyre.

It seems most of them in oz have the big brutal reinforced tyre carrier.

Nothing. My alloys must be just the right off-set to clear everything.

I get a minor scrape on the drivers side when on full lock turning right when I hit a hard bump at speed. It only scrapes on the plastic flare slightly.

I think this is due to my fat arse being above it.

Otherwise no scrapes and easy to get tyres.

Gary,

Most Syncro 16's have that same pressed steel skidplate that you mentioned. 16" Syncros carry their spate tyre on a carrier in the rear or inside partially under the rear bench and partially under the cargo bed in Doublecabs (Doka, Crewcabs, Utes, etc). That's how it is in my Syncro.

I do have an '85 Syncro Doka. This was originally delivered to the German market. Has the same clamshell we have on US Vanagons. Except this one  has a second spare tyre mount in the cargo bed up against the rear bulkhead. Not sure it that's a factory item though.

The standard position for the spare is in the back. The 3 others are options.

Early Australian syncros were in the back.

I don't know if we had the clam shells with some of the 14x5.5" wheels.

The heavy duty carrier is for the 14x6" wheels with 205R14 tyres.

With 16" wheels the swing out rear carrier was an option.

Hi Scott, I am really interested by this as I am about to fit 16" alloys with a 33+ offset. I had read that 215/75/15 and 215/70/16 was the max you could go to be just scrapping the mud spat with standard guards. If you get a chance could you let me know your total offset. I am curious whether it is the inside or the out side of the tyre that hits? Greg E

Greg,

My syncro is still at the mechanics and is pissing me off at the moment so I can actually check. From memory the wheel off-set is 36. The outer edge of the R/H front tyre just nicks the plastic flare on full or almost full lock when I hit a big bump  - usually when going into a steep driveway where there is a big camber in the road or if I go over a kerb.

The tyres miss the rear trailing arms by about 10mm. I have had 2 sets so far the first were Hankooks (they were OK but wore quickly and had weak side walls) and the current set are BFG's - they are brilliant and love them - smooth, strong well designed tyre with fairly low road noise for how aggressive the tread is.

Cheers,

Scott

The critical thing at the front is tyre diameter not so much width and 235/75/15 will rub if you go 4 wheeling. As for offset I would suggest you stay as close to the stock specs as possible. ET30 being ideal. Moving the tyres offset in or out will do little to stop fender scrub. When steering hard right it is the outside edge of the tyre that rubs first. Hitting bumps in a straight line will cause the center/outer of the tyre to scrub.. I have 30x9.5x15 mickey thompsons on 6.5" alloys with an offset of 30 plus a 2" lift. Even with the lift I've had to cut the backs of my front fenders to allow for offroading. 235's are a half inch smaller in diameter and I have test run these on my syncro. Far less problems with fender scrub than current tyres but yes anymore than a little soft roading and you'll make contact with the mud spat.

I know you probably don't like the idea of hacking away at your arches but if you decide to go that route it can be done very easily and neatly as the mud spat can be placed over the cut to give a stock look again. You can see in these pics my arches have been trimmed back about an inch and the mud spat has been reattached further back covering up the cut. http://farm6.static.flickr.com/5164/5377464434_6cd63ce688_m.jpg

My UK spec van is even weirder, has a pressed metal skid plate that doesn't hold a spare. Just keeps the mud off the gubbins above.

Erik, Thats big rubber for a syncro!!! From memory you fitted an ej22? My poor asmatic mv would struggle with that increase in gearing. Those mickeys are very popular and look great. I would love to look at the photos of your mods but I can't open the links. Greg

Greg E

Cheers,

Mine is an 88 model and it has the big bulky skid plate tyre holder which has never housed a useable tyre - unless I removed the central driveshaft or installed a decoupler as the space is too small to fit a 235 x 75 x 15" tyre.

It seems most of them in oz have the big brutal reinforced tyre carrier.

That's what the factory did for the 16" option.
Thanks for the feed back Ben. I am trying to increase the diameter of my tyres to improve ground clearance, gearing and looks. At 215/65/16 the diameter is almost the same as my current 27/8.5/14. I am thinking 225/70/16 which is almost a 20mm increase in radius. Greg E

Greg, you're right I am running an ej22 though it's my transmission that makes running big tyres a necessity (6.166 r&p). By running 30x9.5x15 tyres all I'm doing is bringing the gearing back to the stock set up (5.43 r&p and 27x8.5x14 tyres)

I would say that if all you're after is more ground clearance it'd be much easier to achieve by a combination of good quality lift springs + larger tyres. I personally like the the gowesty 2" lift springs I installed on my syncro. They are h&r springs made in germany and should never sag. They are also a progressive spring stiffening up once the inner springs coil bind. The ride is similar to the stock spring (slightly stiffer) . The progressive nature certainly helps fender rub with taller tyres. They also allow one to bring the camber angle in spec which would be a problem with any more lift than that. Although I'm very happy with the springs and tyres I certainly wouldn't want my syncro any higher as it stands 4" taller than stock now. You'd achieve 7.5cms extra ground clearance (more if your current springs have sagged significantly) if you went the 225/70/16 which would be very noticeable. Rubbing wouldn't be an issue with that size + springs either. At the end of the day it comes down to how much extra lift you're after. I hope the links work now

covering up the cut.

Erik, Thats big rubber for a syncro!!! From memory you fitted an ej22? My poor asmatic mv would struggle with that increase in gearing. Those mickeys are very popular and look great. I would love to look at the photos of your mods but I can't open the links. Greg

You can see in these pics my arches have been trimmed back about an inch and the mud spat has been reattached further back

Greg E

Cheers,

Skot

Scott, what mods did you do to the front guards to fit that size tyre? Greg E

My UK spec van is even weirder, has a pressed metal skid plate that doesn't hold a spare. Just keeps the mud off the gubbins above.

Erik,

As far as I know, all of the Australian delivered Syncros came with the reinforced tyre carrier.  Phill and Steve will certainly know.
