Syncro Speedo

Hi to all. Les has got me back on the site. Well done Les. No emails since 6 August. I was going into withdrawal!!!! Will have to log on to the group in yahoo and see what has been happening.

Just enjoyed a nice visit up here by Phill and Joanne. Nice bike ride on Sunday and lots of Syncro chat of course.

Does anyone know where I could get a KPH speedo. My bus was built in 1988 and doesn’t even have an odometer or 100,000 digit.

Regards, Peter from Port

Hi Peter,

I recently bought one from Tristar Connection through their eBay shop. Go to eBay and type in Article number 260796854525 into search and it should come up. They are good to deal with. I think it was around $150 delivered.

Cheers, Andy Sinclair. St.Kilda.

Peter,
Just so you know, look closely at the speedo pic in the ebay advert. On its face near the bottom is stamped "1000". That's a syncro speedo. Any other number is the wrong speedo.

Here's one from Canada, assuming it is a "1000" speedo ... bit rich though ... http://www.thesamba.com/vw/classifieds/detail.php?id=1162499

Thank you Andy and Ken. I have ordered one. I already have the tacho so will be installing everything as soon as it arrives. Will see if I can get the numbers wound back to match my current kms. Perhaps VW might do it locally. I assume they are a sealed unit.

Cheers, Peter from Port

all the VW speedometers of our T3 van era that I have ever seen sure are not sealed units in any way.
You can take them apart and do anything you want with them.

Reviving the topic “Syncro Speedo”, I don’t recall ever reading a question nor an authoritative answer to the following:

Why is it so and what purpose does it serve that on the syncro speedo dial, between the 50 & 55 kmph markers, this space ONLY is coloured?

Ken, 50km/h is the speed limit within cities and urban/build up areas throughout Europe.
That indicator on the speedo is to make it easier to identify your speed within those areas

Thanks for that clarification, you win the prize for a first time answer to a first time question. Well done Arne!
Meaning we got here a European speedo, that 50-55 marker serves no legal purpose in OZtralia that I’m aware of.

Interesting then that the instrument cluster in the pic, I purchased from USA. The MPH speedo that came in it had NO similar coloured marker anywhere on its dial. Cheers. Ken

Maybe it was for thought of the importers that we would one day introduce 50khp in built up areas

Plenty of 50 kph areas in Port Macquarie. Makes no difference to the P players of course. Peter
