Syncro

Hi Les ,have seen this on the web http://www.tradingpost.com.au/Automotive/Used-Cars/AdNumber=D961301380667?AdOnTop=
has A/C but no diff locks - are diff locks available and can they fitted - if not to costly
What rims and tyres would you recommend and is the price fair assuming the vehicle is in good shape
Have had a front and back diff lock on my previous Syncro which I would confidently take off road in any condition
Would no diff locks adversely effect the off road capability
Regards
Philippe

Well, it has all the goodies and the price is about what could be expected.

A rear diff lock can be fitted; the gearbox has to be removed and machined to accept the locking mechanism.

That said and given that the VC is in working order, a Syncro will go a very long way further that a whole lot of vehicles and not a few four wheel drives.   It just comes down to sensible driving in difficult terrain.   The addition of a front diff lock will enable passage in rather extreme conditions but comes with steering restrictions.   Taking into account where one would sensibly want to go in a laden camper, you can do without a front diff lock.

But, as I have said to a lot of people over the years, try it first; most people are extremely surprised at where a bog standard, non-diff lock Syncro will go.

Les

HI, not sure if it helps, but we bought an almost identical syncro last year. Same high top and also a trakka conversion, 160k on the clock.  Ours has front and rear diff locks, and was the 'time camper' with solar panels, leather upholstery and a host of other extras. We paid 16k so 22k seems a bit steep. There are pics of it in an article I just uploaded to the forum 'files' section.
The high top is, to us, totally invaluable. It means camping with the 'roof up' in high winds and rain is fine and peaceful, and there is tons more storage up top. WE simply adore it. THe only possible downdie with a high top (other than slightly higher fuel consumption) is that it doesn't sleep more people in the roof, so basically it is just a double bed. But you can of course add an annexe or maybe even a cot across the front seats. Anyway, I think the price seems a little high myself and its been on sale for a while. Make them an offer of about 18k and take it from there?..

Phillipe,my Syncro has got me to some awkward places that other standard 4 wheelers couldnt get up.
I do have rear diff lock but find the bus gets most places, that I want to get, without it locked.
I found that the first few times I went off-road,I used it more as I was unsure of the capabilities of the bus.The more I drove it and got used to the way it like to be driven, the less I use rear diff lock.
This year I even did Point Plomer Road in 2wd except for one particular sandy part on the Port Mac end.

Hi Philippe,
The red syncro on Perth Gumtree is still listed... Might be worth checking. $7500. Good luck!

Get a second hand genuine one from the US. The Australian ones are crap.

In particular, don’t even think about the local mounting bracket for the compressor.   They are made up out of half inch steel plate, they weigh five times more than they should and they fit where they touch.   The bracket on my Syncro was so crude and so ill-fitting that it broke the mounting boss off the left rear corner of the crankcase.   Repairing that is on my ‘to do’ list but it is a long way off yet.

The original is cast aluminium and does the job properly without breaking bosses off the crankcase!   I have one is stock but because my repair is so far off, I could sell it and get another later.

Philippe,

Regarding rims and tyres, the original Syncro wheel is extremely strong (heavier gauge than the 2WD wheel) and is very fit for purpose.

The B F Goodrich All Terrain tyre has a very good reputation in Australia.   I have been trying to ascertain for some time if they are still making the 27X8.5X14 but I have just wasted over half an hour on their all singing all dancing but no information websites and got absolutely nowhere.   I will have another try later.

They are making them in 15” and a number of people have gone to 15” wheels to stay with the BFG.

For those wondering what Phill is alluding to, it is the maker of a locally fitted air conditioner.  They are the people who made the mounting bracket from half inch plate!!   It looks like something that fell off a Sunshine Harvester, circa 1908.   I have kept mine as an example of truly awful workmanship – and even that begs the term ‘workmanship’!

Hartmut,

That "crap" bracket has at least three useful and ongoing functions ...

1. an excellent door stop in Port M gale force windy weather

2. an ever ready conversation starter, in particular about good old OZ ingenuity

3. a counter weight for raising lowering stuff to/from the mezzanine floor

You really shouldn't have binned it!

Les,

The local news today is that a private small plane has managed to crash into the adjacent ferris wheel at the Old Bar VW Spectacular starting today. Occupants of the plane and the ferris wheel are trapped.

From what you say then yes, it could have been a lot worse if instead the crap bracket had been dropped and crashed!
