T3 Caravelle Carat for sale

Interesting top of the line 1990 Carat model T3 for sale. Note the additional body kit and front spoiler. A brochure I have from the period says they offered the option of a lowered "sports" suspension but no Syncro otherwise I could be tempted to head North.

Good friend of mine has two of these (one almost completely cut up and off to the tip) and the other with a turbo charged Suby motor and recently added airbag suspension.

He can lower it to within 15mm of the centrally mounted 2wd fuel tank.

I will see if I can attach a photo.

Cheers,

Skotty,

Am I imagining it or is the side door on the 'correct' side? I don't see a door handle but the slider track is there.

Looks perfect as a street sweeper. Just attach a broom under the front bumper.

Ben T,

All our vans are like that over here - we have the sliding track cover to both sides same as the bay window model yet only the track on the passenger side unless you can find one of those uber-rare double sliders.

Actually, have you ever seen a double slider syncro before?

You would be the man to know as you have a large collection and have a larger syncro audience than we get all the way down here.

What are "gene berg rockers, power chip"(aprox.45% more power)and do they actually give you more power? Greg

gene berg rockers

Ratio rockers that lift the valves 1.4 times the movement of the pushrod.

,power chip

Gives more fuel and raises the rev limiter

(aprox.45% more power)

bs

and do they actually give you more power?

yes, a little bit. Also increases fuel consumption.
Thanks Phill

I was wondering about the fuel consumption. Always trade offs.

Hi Skot,

Sorry for the late reply. I figured as much regarding that track. It seems RHD T3's are built similar to T2's in that there was a provision to for tracks on both sides.

I must say that in all the oddball T3's I have seen, no double slider Syncros have ever flown by my radar. That's not saying there aren't any around. Most dual sliders I've encountered were transports for the likes of airports. Perhaps taxis in other countries. The likelihood of a Syncro taxi or passenger bus seems slim to none.

Since you have the spot for the track, why not build one? LHD sliders are more plentiful that RHD ones. You've already got half the job done and the difficult side at that. I'm building a Tristar door into my 3-door Doka. Found myself a RHD Doka door and having the hinge B-pillar welded on. besides the latch post, everything else was there hiding under the side panel. The same is probably true on van bodies.

I had this vision of using the dual slider in an unconventional way. Namely, turn one side into a 'pop-out' ala' American style RV. It's an interesting way to add width to your Syncro when at the campground. Fortunately for me, my girlfriend does not like camping. Otherwise, I might be compelled to build or have someone build such an economically impractical contraption onto a Syncro.

Cheers,

Ben,

I just shudder at the thought of bringing an angle grinder near my syncro - but if I had even half your collection and a bit more time (the boss, work and the kids seem to take most of that away) it would have potential. Possibly make the syncro less rigid though and more likely to crack around the sliding doors after some heavy off-road fun.

Maybe this is why VW didn't make them? Also the market for them would be low.

Makes it more difficult to make a row of cupboards along one side as well.

The sliding door is a structural weak point in the body.  It is possible to have a sliding door on each side (and VAG has produced many in the T1 and T2, possible also the T3) but it requires considerable strengthening to maintain longitudinal torsional integrity.

The T5s produced as ambulances are dual sliders too. I was looking at one at auction recently. The slider on the drivers side was boxed in inside but when you opened it all of the oxygen tanks and other emergency stuff was available. Quite a nifty design. I was thinking one would make a good camper but I have enough projects with one syncro... They come out of service with 190k on the clock so could be a heap of trouble I guess.

A kombi club friend of mine from Newcastle sold a dark blue 85 twin slider
for $1K and bought a caravelle GL auto in good condition for the same
price - then spent $1300.00 on the brakes.

Very amusing.
