T3 Connecting Rod Bolts and Nuts.

G’Day All,

Whilst I don’t post much I regularly read many of the posts with interest!

I don’t have a T3 but I do own close relatives, Pinzgauers, and currently I’m restoring a late model 718 TD Pinzgauer (one of only two in Australia) which uses a diesel, 6 cylinder, VW D24TIC……the motor was never imported into any vehicle in Australia but was used in their LT range in Europe and in some diesel Volvo cars in the US, Europe and the UK.

I’m currently rebuilding the motor, amongst other parts, but am having trouble sourcing the TTY Conrod, Big End bolts and nuts, however I understand they “are/maybe ?” the same used in the T3……I say “are/maybe” as I have run the part numbers on Google and a few times T3’s are mentioned (the only Australian delivered vehicles that I can see on the list), but a local VW parts supplier says the parts aren’t listed on his system.

I must say, the parts are available in limited quantities overseas but he shipping costs of the places I’ve found so far, are a killer

If they are the same can anyone advise me of a seller in Australia and I’II can look at purchasing here.

The Bolt is VW Part No: 037 105 425

The Nut is VW Part No: 068 10

Thanks,

Peter (Profpinz)

Sorry, I don’t know what happened there but on my copy the numbers have been cropped!

It is certainly not the same as a petrol T3 and I doubt it would be the same as a Jx. I think your only option will be OS.

In case anyone is wondering about this post, Peter was given membership to this group a long time back because of his Haflinger and Pinzgauer interests.  Why?  Because they are products of Steyr Puch, from whence came the drive system on the T3 Syncro.  It was designed by Steyr Puch engineers and was in fact fitted at the Puch factory in Austria .

Peter,

There is one person who has a near encyclopaedic knowledge of VW parts and that is John Goodison at Volks Home in Thomastown.  He might recognize the numbers regardless of what models it might have been fitted to.

Give him a couple of days to catch his breath after the Day of the Volkswagen; he is one of the principal organizers.

Peter, those parts are fitted to the JX 1.6 engine fitted to syncros. They are also found on nearly every diesel VW and Audi made from around 1980 until 1992.

G’Day Les,

Thanks for the info…..much appreciated!                                                                                                                                                                                           so

I’II contact John later in the week.

BTW, Les, I’ve have an idea rumbling around in the back of my mind for a few years now, that when I finish this “new” Pinny, I’II organise another Australian Steyr Puch Treffen (we’ve had two so far…one in Victoria and the other in the Flinders Ranges), but this time to invite all SDP related vehicles including G Wagens and Synco’s….. A few of the people I know who work for various 4WD magazines etc have expressed interest in such a gathering so we might get a bit of coverage……..In the past we’ve had guests come from the UK and Austria for the events.

Do you think Synco owners would be interested?

Regards,

Peter.

Hi Peter,
Sounds all tooo interesting , I will travel to the end of the landmass to be counted in. This would be such a special event. I had the idea of inviting the folks who tested our TriStar for a year without being able to break it. They could have a go a second time round, just some 25 yrs down the track. They crossed Oz twice West / East ( the more easy one) and East / West for good measure. On this trip the TriStar had to carry 40 full jerry cans Diesel for the 3 Jab 4x4s
they were testing. In the end they wrote a glorious report about the VW and concluded that the Importer could maybe sell a few Dokas if they wouldn't be so ugly ......

Please keep me informed about developments !

Peter,

This is an idea of considerable potential.

To answer your last question, yes, by all means.  I would be very happy to publicise this via this group.

There must be a few Haflingers still around the place and no such gathering would be complete without them.  I would certainly like to see some early G Wagens there.  It is still in production, which says a considerable amount for its market acceptance from the outset.

With enough advance notice, you might even get some support from SDP.  It is unlikely that VAG would be interested but you never know!  It could be worth a try, particularly if there is local motoring press support.

Please keep me posted.

Peter have you tried VW for the bolts? If they fit a caddy/golf engine there might even be some in the country.

Hi Les,

I pricked up my ears on this too having had a brother who owned a G Wagon for a while and a work colleague unfortunately now deceased with a Haflinger. Do I remember correctly that the Forest Commission brought 1 in for evaluation in the 60's or 70's and despite being most impressed with its capabilities never ordered any. I used to lust after them but decided the T3 was a less tedious proposition to cross the Nullabor.

I happened to be in Italy in September (as one does) and photographed this Vienna registered vehicle which I assumed was an early MB G Wagon. It turned out to be a 300GD but with the probably more accurate  Puch badge on the front grill and wheel hubs. Even more interesting was the Haflinger sticker/Transfer on the rear tailgate. I expect Hart to respond with VIN number, history, expedition fitout etc from his prolific memory and life experiences.

Trust you are nicely settled into your new (previous?) abode - DOTVW photos to follow.

Cheers

Roger
