T5 SP Rockton and T5 Beach

Hi Campers,

If anyone had the temerity to think that VW may have subsequently produced something to rival the T3 Syncro then the vehicles in these links would have to be on the shortlist. It seems the Rockton is commercially available in Europe but presumably not in RHD.form.($1AUD approx Euro 0.75)
Could the expedition version be the equivalent of a T3 16" ?
Phil, Is it time to get out the money you have been stuffing in your matress since you missed out on a new 16"?

Bruce if you are reading this we were also very sorry to not have your company on this year's Shallow Crossing but you did have a fair reason to be excused. I think I should take your advice and say no more.("It is better to remain silent and be thought a fool than to speak out and remove all doubt" Mark Twain.)

Hi Greg,

All California campers are SWB (I may be corrected; but certainly it is their standard configuration). Maybe that is necessary for congested European markets, but I appreciate the LWB Trakka. The Rockton is also SWB, and I can understand that for 'off-road' use, as the 'ramp-over' angle of the LWB is my biggest limitation. I'm hoping some of the underbody protection from the Rockton becomes available through spare parts (and that it is adaptable to the LWB vans). Or, if any-one knows of a local engineering shop that can fabricate such things, I love to hear about it (preferably in Melbourne).

I thought this one would drag you out of the wood work Brian. Re protection: From memory the factory splash pans are fairly flat. Why don't you make some out of aluminium checker plate. Martins in West Heidelberg will guillotine it. Greg E

In my opinion they are less vulnerable/more capable off road plus you have a tighter turning circle if you find you have to turn back on a track that has run out or is blocked.
Of course once you are camped its a case of the bigger the better so really the compromise is a capability/comfort trade off. A longer wheelbase will generally ride better.I understand from Brian that a long wheelbase T5 is necessary to get the same floor area as a T3.which is one of the reasons we love our syncros but its still an 80's vechical in a crash. I wonder if a really hard hit in the rear would be better in the rear engined T3 compared to a T5 but I hope never to  empirically find out.
