Brian. I had a similar experience. Was quoted $750 from Coffs harbour experts to fit and balance new joints. Had another mob press in the tractor ones for a fraction of the price. Was about 3 years ago about 45000 km. So far so good. When i bought my van the bundle of receipts showed replacement unis at 120000km. for about $250. The cheap price would indicate they wern't the hardy spicer expensive ones. I had the job done again at 250000km. Current mileage 295000km. The observation is the cheapies lasted as long as the oroginal equipment, although both should last longer i would think. Bill
I have a dead VW one after 50k.

Could be rust?????? caused by water???
Maybe it's age not mileage???
The flogged out yokes may be mileage??? or owners driving with dead unis???

In other words, under engineered for the specified purpose. Greg E

I wonder how long other permanent 4WD unis last?

I cant find the Hardy Spicer receipt for my propshaft, but from what I remember it was about $750.This was for a new, thicker balanced shaft and yokes with stronger, bigger and more available uni-joints and a slip-yoke.
Seemed like a no brainer considering new replacement unis were almost that price and also I had damage yoke eyes, that had to be repaired by pitting them for a tighter fit. This didnt seem like a long term fix.
I did have problems with the new shaft vibrating and I took it back twice until it was remedied.(no-charge)
I looked into the GW replacement but with freight it was dearer.
Hardy Spicer were very helpful and I have since learned that their main man who built my shaft has without a doubt the most experience in building driveshafts in the country.

Greg,Hardys were not familiar with syncro and I had to keep telling them, its a AWD Kombi, but under-engineered for the specific purpose sounds like something he mentioned.
I think it was more like "piss weak" after they had a look at my bus.
They were not impressed with the size of the unis and laughed at the dampner.
Even though there is very minimal movement with suspension travel with the tranaxle and front diff being mounted to the chasis all driveshafts and drive train components can benifit from having a slip yoke.

It would be pricey to buy one of these, pay for shipping, and ship the old "core unit" back to the states.

My shaft doesn't have a slip yoke, but it doesn't need one because the components aren't swinging around on road springs, like a conventional vehicle.

But I agree that there has to be an allowance for the slight flexing of the front diff and rear transaxle on the rubber mounts.

Which is why the elves in the Black Forest put a rubber coupling on the tailshaft.

I think I'll stick with the original setup, but am tempted to look around for a stronger and cheaper alternative to Hardy Spicer.

Sounds like Ben has already travelled this road. What was his solution?

Roger, what else would you like to know??

Thanks Ben - you already answered my questions in another post.

                                                                         Cheers, Roger.
