Hi JonE,
Why do you want to replace them ? I remember some 10 yrs ago that I asked for new ones , they were about $ 12.- ea. X 8 of course. So, after 20 yrs and with the prop being in and out for at least 6 times I am still relying on the originals.
Would be interesting to find out how much VAG wants for them....Hart

Hullo everyone,
I wish to replace the 4 x 8mm bolts for the flanges at each end of the tailshaft after installing a new vc and decoupler. Do I need to get vw parts or can I just replace with over the counter high tensile bolts?
Regards
JonE
The nuts are N 022 152 1 M8x1 (self locking)
It appears that they are a fine thread if 1 is the pitch.
Check with VW and if they are expensive they are available aftermarket.

I just removed my propeller-shaft yesterday. The nuts and bolts are still in good nick after being in and out at least three times in the last ten years.
The only reason to replace them is if they are damaged or rounded off.
I clean them up with a rotary brass brush on the bench grinder, and if the threads are dirty, run a thread chaser or tap and die over them.
If you need new ones, just buy them over the counter. If you go to a good engineering-supplies outlet the counter-jockey can read the heirogliphics on the original bolt to provide you with the correct hi-tensile replacement.
The originals are 8mm x 1.0 with "10.9" stamped on the head. Try and get 13mm heads to match the originals, although 12 mm heads would have the advantage of [possibly] allowing the use of a ring spanner for better grip.
Although listed at 25mm long on Ekta, the shanks on my bolts are 22mm long. The extra 3mm won't make any difference.
The factory lock-nuts are unusual, but nyloc nuts would do the job.
I removed the tailshaft due to an insidious vibration that has gradually been getting worse. At first I thought it was my imagination, but after a couple of months it has intruded on my consciousness at highway speeds. It felt and sounded like an out-of-balance tyre.
Crawling under the van and grabbing and wobbling the uni joints gave no clue to any wear, but with the tailshaft removed the vibration was gone.
Inspection of the uni's showed no signs of slop, dryness or roughness, but the rear uni had a small amount of sideways play which must have been allowing the shaft to flog around.
Now to search through the archives for posts on uni-joint replacement.
I seem to recall that they are hard to find ...
I was thinking of taking the prop-shaft to a specialist to be balanced.
Any thoughts?

If it's just that notchy feeling it would be the uni.

Yes if it is notchy, then its the uni.But if there is no sign of tighteness in the uni, then inspect the yoke where the uni sits in.
If it is worn oversized or egg-shaped then a new uni will just flop around.

Some time ago one of my shaft joints went. Went to the local macho 4/4 boys, for port macquarie people it was binskins. These people modified and lifted 4/4s. They said it was too hard, so my cackles went up. I went home and pressed the uni out, went to the local tractor supplies and got the same joint off the shelf. Had it done that arvo. Never had a problem since.
Still have the packaging for the new uni joint in shed if any of you want the part no.

hi ,only did this in feb but all good so far, they were very good, seem to know their stuff,i had used them before for a truck propshaft,24 hours from drop off to pick up,said that the most common problem with them was the yoke starting to splay out and the shaft bending, looked up my receipt, straighten, balance and new joints $330,quized them about making a new one at the time and it wasn't that much more expensive 450-500 from memory cheers mike
