Tailshaft uni joints

Hi all, just wondering if any one has bought universals for the centre
drive shaft recently. I can only find them through hardy spicer and they want $250 each! I rang VW - NLA. I found a couple of american blogs where guys have used a pto uni, this has a much lower torque capability. Any info would help greatly. Greg
Greg, i've replaced them with PTO unis and i did a post on here a while back with relevant part numbers and a supplier. Log in to the yahoo group and do some searching. If you can't find it let me know and i'll dig out my paperwork

Thanks Gary, yes I had already come up with the same part no for that pto joint. How many kms have you done since fitting said joints? Are all your vibration problems fixed? Should we not be worried about the load rating of the joint?

There are a few sites in America selling these new for $500 ish dollars. I was trying to avoid spending that much. After all I just need a couple of unis that usually cost $20-$40 dollars! The big question is, why is this guy selling what is meant to be the best (and most expensive) solution. Greg

Ken, that would be a good solution if you could find someone to make one. Gowesty and a few other places make similar versions around the $500 mark but the shipping would be silly i imagine.

Greg, i have my tailshaft out but ready to refit so i haven't tried it. I also have a brand new VC waiting to go in but i currently don't have a matching spare tyre for my BFGs so i'm too worried about fitting the shaft and vc and then having a puncture leaving me with no way to get home without dropping the tailshaft.

Got to get my wheel carrier sorted out and find another Merc rim....

Or get a Decoupler...

I believe Rudi up on Bribie island fits the unis mentioned without problem. You could always try giving him a call, his details are on the list somewhere.

Not sure there are too many other options.

This came up recently.

Someone went through what was available and eventually found a standard commercial universal that fitted.

Who was it?  I thought it might have been Michael Roberts.  Can anyone home in on this?

Gary, with the current favourable exchange rate, something like this would probably be surface shipped at more reasonable cost. Not had reason yet to pursue this though .... touch wood.

Yes, it would certainly be much cheaper going via sea but when you ask Gowesty they only seem to have one option for shipping and won't send stuff any other way even when asked nicely.

I have tried before from the US and found that it was only about 10-15% cheaper. Europe is a different matter.

Still, in true Xmas spirit, they recently offered $US10 off shipping costs for recent orders. Woo hoo!

Check out Domain Radar NOW! A world FIRST in property search has arrived!
I rang hardy spicer this morning to try and find a joint that could handle the load and speed. The pto joint is only rated to 1000rpm, we need five times that! All other options need machining(ie commodore joints). After chatting for a while he made me an offer, $143+ not $289+. At half price I could not say no. The interesting thing is he knew all about syncro tail shafts as they had done "plenty". I believe mine has not been disassembled from factory and the new joints have the same markings. Best of all I have them in my hands already. Greg

Greg,

Were you talking to the factory in Clayton or a Hardy Spicer outlet?  Given the very low numbers of Syncros that came to Australia , I am very curious about the comment that they had done “plenty.  Which joint did they offer you?

Hi Greg

Sounds good, i'd also like to know details as my PTO ujs i've installed are not up to the job! Groan. Especially if they can actually do the work and have experience of the syncro.

Les, I don't know of the Clayton factory. I went to the campbellfield branch. The joint is    K5 A7 67  and is only for the Syncro. When I suggested he would not be selling many at that price he said they were not only selling but doing the full refurb. Greg

Greg,

Were you talking to the factory in Clayton or a Hardy Spicer outlet?  Given the very low numbers of Syncros that came to Australia , I am very curious about the comment that they had done “plenty.  Which joint did they offer you?

I rang hardy spicer this morning to try and find a joint that could handle the load and speed. The pto joint is only rated to 1000rpm, we need five times that! All other options need machining(ie commodore joints). After chatting for a while he made me an offer, $143+ not $289+. At half price I could not say no. The interesting thing is he knew all about syncro tail shafts as they had done "plenty". I believe mine has not been disassembled from factory and the new joints have the same markings. Best of all I have them in my hands already. Greg

Greg,

Clayton is their point of manufacture in Australia and that’s where their engineering department is.  I had a fair bit of contact with them while I was doing proof-of-concept and prototype vehicles at Holden.

Whatever, if they are doing rebuilds of the Syncro prop shaft, that is very good news indeed because they will come with a factory guarantee
