Tassie Tour 2013

Happy New Year Everyone.

Owe you all an update on the Tassie Tour

Participants:

John & Grace :
Hart:
Jurgen(with his "Camel")
Paul (I hope-haven't heard direct)
 myself Roger
i.e.  6 people 5 vehicles. Sorry to hear that its out for a number of others but this still allows a bit of room for late participants if circumstances change. Also is a T5 acceptable ?

I think it would be correct to say all the participants are retired and not tightly bound by dates?

The original dates suggested Depart Mon 18 Feb return Sun 10 March are still available on the Spirit of Tasmania EXCEPT for pensioner concessions.

There is still good availability Feb 18 -March 8 with some availability outside this mid week.

A company that I only know from its listing on the web. "Travel with a cause" claims to offer lower rates than booking with the Spirit direct plus it donates all its profits to 3rd world charities. It appeals to me unless it is a scam. Anyone know anything of it?

Whilst it would be good to all travel together was however thinking that it would be best if we all book our own actual sailings to suit to allow people to get over earlier or return later if required but with a given starting date and time in Devonport e.g.. 9am Tues 19 Feb start off together and return to Devonport in time for the Sun 10 March 7.30pm sailing.

I think I should rejig the itinerary to bring us to Hobart for a Saturday "Salamanca Market" and slow the pace down - Do others agree? I'd expect that we could be flexible enough to vary things by general consensus as we go along but basically stick to an agreed plan.

I'll send this off now, lets have some feedback and look to confirm ferry bookings by this time next week.

Looks a good group to me.

Cheers
Roger

Hi Roger,

Thank you so much for all the work you have put into this !!!! Do we allow a T5???????  Remember that the T5 is the grandchild of the Syncro ! and therefore most welcome !(to make us tea in the

morning).  The date / time of importance is really only the 19th Feb  9.00 am boarding the ship. Will ask Elke to book my space for the Tristar. I'm pleased to read that we could go in company

from Sydney , could be an interesting trip with the 3t Syncro Camel LHD  amongst (behind) us....

Would anybody have a contact # of Paul Niven ??

Hi Hartmut and all,

Again, sorry I'm not on board this Tassie adventure.

Just to be clear though on a couple of points Roger has posted ...

"Travel together" reference is only about whether or not to travel together on the same FERRY journey. Whereas if there are those who might want to "travel together" to reach the Melbourne Port ferry terminal from interstate, that would be an altogether different and additional matter yet to be worked out between individuals.

"Given starting date and time in Devonport e.g.. 9am Tues 19 Feb start off together" reference concerns the suggested convoy day & time leaving Devonport, having already completed re-provisioning, re-fuelled & serviced the syncro, re-filled fresh water tank, had an am group conference about the itinerary for that day and turned on CB's to the same channel. So as a minimum, suggest booking a ferry journey that departs Melbourne Port a day or two prior to Tues 19 Feb so as to complete the above tasks and link up with the whole group at a yet to be determined meeting point address in Devonport.

Clear as mud?

Cheers.

Ken

Since sending the above, parts of Tasmania have been engulfed in flames which whilst devastating for those involved probably should not affect the proposed tour.
I will shortly post a revised suggested itinerary which includes the Bay of Fires and more of the East coast, Salamanca Place market on a Saturday plus virtually all the other previous attractions. Will have this up in the next few days.
However  apart from Hart I haven't had any feed back to my last message below. Hart could you hold off Elke booking the ferry for a few days whilst I receive confirmation from those named below that they still intend coming. I'd particularly (and hopefully) like to hear direct from Paul that he intends joining us.
There was still a range of accommodation on the Spirit for the 2 night time sailings shown below when I last checked.
It really can be a great tour for those who have so far indicated and its not too late for any others.
Cheers
Roger

Hi Roger. Peter from Port Mac here in my old home town. Certainly not pleasant in Hobart with the town covered in smoke from the fires. We were at Coles Bay for three days and got out on Saturday before the road was closed because of the fire south of Bicheno which crossed the Coles Bay Rd. Coles Bay never under threat though.
Different story on the Tasman Peninsula. The Arthur Highway is still closed and The fire that devastated Dunally is now headed towards Taranna. Under active watch at present. Terrible for the people down there and many have been evacuated by boat back to Hobart, tourists included. Port Arthur will be closed for quite a while they reckon and power is still a problem because of so many burnt power lines.
We fly home tomorrow but will be keeping a watch of course. There is another large fire near Burnie that is causing concern. The Prime Minister is here touring the burnt towns.
People are mobilising support and donations are flooding into the the various centres.
We are staying with my parents who overlook Mona, the new museum and I just took a photo to show the smoke that is about.
Regards to all, Peter

This is to confirm that I have made a 9am Mon 18 Feb booking Melbourne Devonport for myself and T5 vehicle . Hart if the worst comes to the worst it has an upper bunk which I could sleep in and you have the lower one if your temporary sleeping arrangement breaks down.
For the return Devonport/Melbourne, the Mon 11 March fare schedule has again changed this time to the same prices as on the Sun 10 March removing the financial incentive to extend by a day. I'd like us to agree on when we return before booking this leg. I suppose it could change down again if enough passengers cancel their bookings because of the fires but equally more Tasmanians may want to leave.
The 9am sailing TO Devonport now shows it has no over 2.1 height vehicle spaces. Could Jurgen get on a wait list for a cancellation stressing that he is part of a group. I could try and do this for him in Melbourne if he would find that helpful but I would need the dimensions Height Width and length, year, and his credit card details to debit (Visa or Mastercard) If unsuccessful he should book the evening sailing and we will meet him in Devonport and take off together on Tuesday morning . Interestingly a 3m high vehicle shows on the web site as costing the same $89 each way as ones under 2.1m.
Can others confirm when and what they have booked.
Thanks
Roger
Sorry folks just in case you think I am also into time travel can I confirm that any reference to a Tassie Tour 2012 should of course be 2013. It takes time for an old bloke to adjust!
Roger
Thanks for the first hand update Peter. It must be sad to return to your old stamping ground and see things in this state. I think things should be under control by the time our Tour gets over but feel selfish talking about us when people will be suffering for a long time. At least the salmon should be nicely smoked and the dampness of the West Coast appreciated.

Hi everyone eagerly anticipating this Tour.

I'm attaching details which bring  together all the admin details that I can think of to get us to Tasmania ready to take off on this fast approaching tour.

Would you respond to the items in Red plus I would welcome feedback on anything I may have omitted or needs clarifying.

I want to bring everything together in 1 final document so will now move to detail the proposed daily itinerary for the  Tour. I have in mind setting out where we anticipate camping each night  with  the day's potential activities set out against it.This should mean than we have a general  plan to follow whilst still allowing flexibility to adjust as a group say due to weather or new discoveries/opportunities or as individuals to opt for something  rather than another due to previous exposure, fatigue, particular interest or  disinterest, McDonalds deprivation  or whatever but come back together overnight and generally go round together.

I aim to have this to you by Monday 4th Feb.

Let me know if you have any problems opening the attached word document.

Cheers

Hi Roger,

Terrific work done there.
May I suggest sticking to a "Save As" and select Word 97-2003 Document format (.doc) for all files to/from Tassie group members. Straight away eliminates one big comms problem.
Cheers.

Thanks for the advice Ken - I will shortly be sending the follow up file on the daily activities so will ensure both that and the previous one are combined and sent saved in Word 97-2003 format. See we do need you along on the Tour (its not too late) but don't cite me in the divorce action.
Cheers
