TDI

Hello All
Well I finally have had the 1.9 TDI Golf engine installed
in my Syncro and now have the vehicle home.

Drove it home from Brisbane last friday without any problems, except
maybe that it is too slow. I have a few problems to sort out , like a
couple of oil leaks and a coolant leak. There is also a clunking sound
in the left rear when I accelerate away. Anyway, have to expect a few
problems. I have some new ratios on order for 3rd and 4th gears to
reduce the revs at 100 km/h, they could take up to 6 months to be done
apparently.

I went up to 15 inch wheels and have fitted 215/75R15 BFG A/Ts. Thought
about something bigger, but I think they will do me, at least I can lift
them!!

A chap I know from up Ingham way has had a 2.5 Subaru motor installed in
his syncro and he is very happy now that it is sorted out. He was pretty
pleased how it easily does 120km/h, I have to be satisified with 90 at
the moment. Oh well!!! He doesn't have a computer though to get onto the
list.

Hi Bruce,   I was very interested to hear about your Diesel conversion…please keep us posted as to how it goes in the future…..More interesting to me though is the gear sets you have ordered….who are they through??  Contact details??  And how did you work out what ratios you needed??   I have the 2.1 MV motor at the moment and would like to reduce the rev’s @ 100 kph also  I'm running 235x75x15 and still think the rev’s are too high.  Any advice would be greatly appreciated…

Regards….

G'day Ken
I'll also be very interested to see how the conversion goes in the future. Not sure if I've done the right thing at this stage but it is too late now, I have to sort it all out and get it going properly.

I'm buying the gears from Albins Gears in Ballarat.  www.albinsgear.com.au   They apparently are very good, they cut gears for race vehicles. They have a calculator on their web site to work out ratios. Just stick in your tyre size and gear ratios and it calculates rpm or km/h, which ever way you want to do it. I had help from the mechanics who put my engine in as well to get the 3rd to 4th spacing right.

Bruce…

Thanks for the info…What ratios did you end up getting…..and did you have a contact at Albins…(ie someones name) as if I order the same ratio…they may do them faster??  Did you have a hard time explaining what a syncro gear box was??  Normally people here in Perth say…”A What”?....  What is your Diff ratio??

Thanks for your help..Regards..
