Maybe it was jealous that we had a good time inTasmania.

Hi Theo,
Welcome home! Made it back in one piece? The syncro behave?
I trust you have or will fully brief Roger on your Tassie exploits and discoveries.
Cheers.
Ken

Hi Ken and all,
Yes the Syncro behaved quite ok considering it is very sick but that is another story.
We had a terrific time. The first 2 weeks it rained quite a bit but then the weather improved and we decided to make the most of it.
Travelling in Tassie is so different to the mainland -,every couple of klms there is always some things to look into as.driving was a bit of a challenge. I have never done so many curves,double-lines and up and downs. The drive up to Ben Lomond and Mt Barrow is real alpine pass driving. Often there is not enough road-side space to stop and take a photo, sometimes even the houses are built right on the road edge. Since we did not have an itinerary, ours was a more free spirited tour, we never really know where we would be the next day.
Mind you, in an organised trip, half a dozen Syncro turning up at a campground may not always find a spot. On the other hand, pre booking months ahead would give no flexibility. We went late in the season March/April (too b.cold) but there were still plenty of
grey nomads on the road. When we tried to book our return trip, our laptop died so, till we found an internet cafe we had to wait another 2 weeks. The down side of not been organised! The weather was still fine - so off we went again,so much to see in tassie. We even got snowed in overnight at the edge of the Great Lake, about 30mm of powder snow.
We have been to the 3 corners of Tasmania plus a lot of in-between.I also managed to do a bit of bush-walking, From Mt Cradle I could see Bass Strait,Mt Rufus, Mt Roland, Hartz Peak, Wineglass Bay and the South Cap Bay. We had also done a bit beach/dune driving in 2WD -  but, it goes better with the De-coupler engaged :-[.
For the first time I used the Mefro rims with the Firestone tyres LT 205x75R15 and I noticed that the tyres picked up a lot of stones. I expected them to hurled out at the next bitumen road, but no they really sat hard in the rubber groves. My old Michelin did not do this. Any comments?
Cheers.
Theo

Hi Theo. As a former Taswegian (NSW since August 2006), great to read your story. I know what you mean about the roads and I used to travel them in pre Syncro days when I had a nice Liberty wagon. I used to do orienteering in all sorts of out of the way places. The top of Cradle Mt is just magic. I did it in about 2003 with still lots of snow about but a clear view. And what a view it is for those fit enough to get up there. I have just been down to Hobart for a family visit , Virgin, not Syncro and it was cold at night.

Re the tyres. I have the same set up as you and I have noticed how they pick up small rocks. Is it just something we have to put up with I wonder? Will it different with wear as we have got quite deep treads. However I really like the tyres and recently I did some rough driving over a dry river bed with large rocks and it did it with ease. The strong walls are great for any off road work but I have not tried them in sand. Cheers, Peter from Port

Happy New Year to all.
