The Bus Stop Front Mudflaps

Phill,

The point you make prompted me to have a quick flick through photo section of the SyncroSA website.  I found a number of Syncros with mudflaps fitted to the wheel arch itself but none with the heavy moulded rubber flaps.  In fact, I was a bit surprised at how many had none at all.

This tends to confirm your point - that's what SA got, while we got the "original".

Les,
Genuine VWSA is different to genuine VAG. It would be like buying a part for your Cheverolet from Holden. They are not always the same. There are not many parts that you get in a German dealer that are made in SA.

No, we only got the rears. We had to buy the fronts.

Remember when Australia had the import restrictions on cars and components? Well SA is worse! They have to have a high percentage of local content. So the vans come without the option box ticked for mud flaps. Ours had the box ticked for rears but not fronts.

SA were building their own vans at the time complete with local mud flaps so most people would just buy the cheap local ones instead of ordering the good ones from Germany.

Recently got a shipment of these same mudflaps. I can't take it out of the package since they are ready to re-ship to someone.
You can see the part number from the package. As far as I am aware, these were never available to US Syncro owners until
very recently. We only got the small mudflap guards which came on all 4 wheel openings. The Westfalia campers got a single mudflap bolted around the seam just ahead of the propane tank (remember -- LHD). About 9-10 years ago, a few enterprising individuals started importing very small quantities of mudflaps from South Africa. They look similar to these European mudflaps
as I recall, those mudflaps had a very "meaty" upper section and a lower section that nearly touched the ground. Unfortunately,
I lost my photo files during that period when my laptop was stolen. Can't seem to find any pics online now.

Pics I took tonight are attached. As I mentioned, these look like the same Euro mudflaps that Ken found.

Ben,

The 251 821 812A number is the same as the one that Phill came up with.  According to the ETKA illustration, this is for the original thick moulded rubber flap that is mounted well behind the wheel arch  and is the one that we had in Australia.

Les,

These were from a German supplier Lars Neuffer. He has a huge stockpile of T3 parts including those originally intended for other
markets. He is not usually the cheapest game in town but he can find even some of the most obscure parts for our Syncros.

The SA mudflaps I saw back in the late 90's had a thicker upper section. I sent an email to one fellow who bought a set. I'm hoping
he can send me a photo of the mudflaps installed on his Westy. Nothing substitutes for pics as personal recollection can be faulty.

And of course you can buy the set from Bernd Jäger, who is offering
even a version with stainless mounting kit :) http://vw-t3-bus.de/karosse/aussen-stostangen-usw/schmutzfaenger-hinten-rechts-2-2-2-2.html

I found the Vanagon Listmember who has a set of the supposedly genuine SA mudflaps. He is taking some photos
and sending them to me tonight (my time -- PST). In the meantime he gave me this part number:

22S 821 833

Ben,

That's an interesting number, to say the least.  Let's see what the pictures tell us.

Derek,

Just for the record, the ones www.van-cafe.com and www.busdepot.com sells are ones sold in Europe
which were discussed earlier in this thread. The SA ones came in two different flavors. As far as originals
are concerned, the newer European flaps are made by an authorized supplier using the original VW tooling
but I do not believe they are the original supplier to VW at the time of T3 production. Technically not original
in some respects. I can't say about the SA variety for lack of personal knowledge about them. From what I
have gathered from this discussion, the mudflaps Les is talking about are also originals in the sense that they
were offered side-by-side with the heavier duty mudflaps by VW. And also as discussed here, there is a marked
difference in the mudflaps sold in Europe by VW (now as replicas) and the heavy duty version sold in RSA. For
one, the SA versions followed the contours of the well arch with a shield that goes far up into the rear of the back
wheelwell.

Cheers,

BenT
