Thermostat and Coolant

Thermostat:   The MV thermostat is NLA!!!!     It can be sourced from Classic.   Great stuff!  Does anyone know of a local supplier?   There's bound to be dozens in the US but it would to get one locally.

Coolant:  My nearest VW place as 12+ for $26 for 1.5 litres.   Does anyone have a better suorce?

Les

Try that again!

Hi Les, Tridon list a part number. http://www.tridon.com.au/partfinder/
Which means you could order it at your closest parts supplier (Repco, Bursons, Autobarn,Supercrap or local independant).
You could try one of the euro parts suppliers in town but they will probably give you a tridon one anyway. Greg E

Greg,

Thanks for that lead.   There is a Bursons not far away and I will try them.

Of course, how silly of me . . . it’s not a coolant, it is an oil!

But it isn’t 12+, it is the earlier blue, so I am still looking for the violet.

And I suspect that what they are listing is premix, not concentrate.

Ken,

That’s the sort of thing that I hope to find.   A complete coolant change would need 7 litres of concentrate.  The handbook specifies 40% min coolant; that is G11 and I don’t know if the 12+ would be any different.

To repair the stripped exhaust stud thread, I had to remove the coolant pump pipe and I have to replace the amount so lost.   In hindsight, I could have re-used the coolant that I caught when I removed the pipe.

I used the last of the 12+ that I had in stock to top up what I had drained and I didn’t have enough to achieve the 40% so probably the quick solution is to get the 1.5 litre contained from the nearest VW dealer to get the ratio right and then look for a cheaper source.

Phill,

The parts bloke at Werribee VW did a ring around while I was there and couldn’t find one except for Classic in Germany .

I am on the Day of the VW committee with Lloyd Davies (Volkwerke) and I will try him for a thermostat and G12+.   Lloyd would not use anything dodgy so I would be happy to use whatever he uses.  The last committee meeting is next week so I will ask him then.

The thermostat is OK for the moment – the main seal is disintegrating but the open and close is still OK.   It will have to be replaced before too long but I have time to find a good one.

Since I am using 12+, I don’t want to mix the coolant if I can avoid it.

Les,
For collecting then recycling sivved coolant, a square plastic washing up tub fits nicely into the bottom level of the Trakka baskets cupboard. I got rid of the crappy Trakka battery charger that used to clutter up that valuable space.
I know Tooley imports in Sydney sells 5 litre G12 plus at a better per litre rate than the 1.5 litre bottle rate. You just need to find an equivalent source in Melbourne.

Phill,

The black seal visible in the above pic has disintegrated on the upper side but is still sealing on the lower side.    I am happy to get a new thermostat because I don’t have a spare in stock.   Once I have put the new one in, I can look for a replacement seal for the existing thermostat.   Being down to just one vehicle these days, I can’t take the existing one out and go looking for a seal.
