Greg,  does not look the real one to me, could be a Oz VW one, but then it would be a NZ one. The original german
ones do have a swan neck, don't know if this is the correct term. They do not have a screw on ball.

I was never happy with the convoluted towbars so I made my own.  The loads are all straight line and it offers a lot of protection to the engine in the event of a rear end shunt.  There are pictures in the Photos section in Miscellaneous, Towbar 1, 2 & 3.

It's not genuine VW.

I have contacted the seller. It sits behind the OE bumper & bolts in with the OE brackets with only the hitch showing. Worth $120?

I know one thing for sure Bruce, it would cost you close to that in materials to make it. The big question is how much load can it take and how much do you want to pull? You could make him an offer. Greg E

I made mine many years ago and it cost three times that (*) but well worth it because it did not involve adding bits to existing bits.  Mine replaces the original bumper mounting brackets entirely.  The original bumper mounting holes are replicated in the new towbar.  From memory, mine has a minimum shear strength of around ten tonnes.

Les

*(It is also gal dipped.  I provided holes in the transverse tube so that the molten gal filled the interior on immersion and drained on withdrawal.)
