Trakka / coolant in water tank

hello, I turned on the sink taps in my Trakka today and found very bright coloured water streaming out of the tap.

My guess is the hot water pipe inside the water tank has corroded and is leaking inside the tank.

Has this happened to anyone else ?

and if so can you tell me what the fix is?

Do I just connect the in and out hoses together and bypass the water tank altogether or can the leak be repaired or is it too big a deal to bother with.

Thanks Greg
Greg, I'm calling on Trakka next Saturday morning if anyone comes up with a solution that needs spare parts from them. Should be back the following Tuesday.
Sounds to me that you are on the right track. I also wonder if a hydronic heating supplier might have a made up heat exchange coil if that's what's needed.. (Noticed one on the right between Caulfield and Chadstone on the Princes Highway going away from town)
The solution is obviously in the coolant. Good luck

Thanks for the offer Roger. At this stage I am going to block of the hot water circuit through the water tank. All it means is I cant have a hot shower which I rarely use anyway.

The next trick is to flush out the coolant out of the drinking water tank.
I am thinking I would use a cup full of bleach in a tank full of water and flush 3 times.

Do you or anyone else have any thoughts on this? Greg

Hi Greg,
I agree if you seal off the heat exchanger it should establish that you have correctly diagnosed the problem. The cold showers should ensure that you don't put extra pressure on your Syncro's seating capacity.
I have read of solutions/additives to put in a water tank to clean them although I think that is more to eliminate nasty microbes.Presume you googled the bleach solution which seems the right approach to me.
If all else fails my brother is a small bore heating specialist and I can get you to talk to him but he is away at the moment.I will also ask Trakka on Saturday if its a problem that they are seeing from T3's and if they recomend a solution.
Good luck.

From memory, Ken posted a comprehensive article a couple of years ago on cleaning water tanks.  I can’t recall if it finished up in Files but would be worth a look.

Doesn't bleach cause corrosion?

Les,

Probably Shannon Lush has alternate suggestions as well ... buy her book, and/or Google an answer, such as ...

Or just keep googling.

Cheers.

Useful posting Ken - reminded me that perhaps its time to flush out my water  tank although that may be the secret on why I can usually look forward to a good run when I go away.
See you Sunday and will offer everyone a cup of home grown bubonic plague flavoured tea.
