Trakka van to Syncro

I own a rusty Syncro 1991 model with good mechanicals. I have the
opportunity to buy a T3 Trakka camper van 89 model with bad
mechanicals. I am looking at putting all the Syncro running gear under
the Trakka. Has anyone done this? Is it an easy option? Is there any
cutting and shutting? Thanks, Paul.
Paul,

Whilst a lot would be bolt-on, it is a major undertaking and there is at least one complicating factor - the fuel tank.

The 2WD tank is at the front and fills from the front, while the 4WD is the reverse.  Installing a Syncro tank starts with cutting into the body to provide for the filler hose and cap.  It goes downhill from there.  The Syncro tank is an extremely tight fit.  An old tank can be next to an interference fit.  I had mine taken out recently and the workshop that did it still can't believe how difficult it was.  The getting out was bad enough, the getting back in was next to impossible.  Yurik (Perth) offered the opinion that the plastic tanks can grow with age and this certainly fits the level of difficulty experienced by the workshop.

Given the totality of modifying the body and transferring the mechanicals, it could be a toss-up between the transfer concept and treating the rust in the existing Syncro.  Transferring the Trakka pop top would be easy by comparison.

Gas conversion eg. gas tank inside with smaller
fabricated tank not unlike tracker water tank??? However a syncro
tracker would save a lot of time and heartache!!!!!

It has been done, but is a very big job with lots of welding. Easier to fix the rust!

Paul,

You'll have to join the group to access it, but it's a pretty good
description of how to go about "Syncronizing" a 2WD. Very little welding
needed.
