Trakka Windscreen

Hello I have to replace the front windscreen of my Trakka and wondering if I should be aware of anything before I hand it over to the "experts" at Windscreen O Brien.  With the pop top so close to the windscreen I am sure it won't be straight forward.

Also wondering if there is any maintenance that should be done in that area at the same time.

Thanks Greg N

Hi Greg,
while the windscreen is out, check for corrosion and treat before putting new screen in.
Windscreen O Brien did a new windscreen for me in the BMW a few of years ago and after fitting it told me that they had done it fro me.
Worth raising with them.

No, the top clears the windscreen rubber – just!  It won’t bother O’Brien.

Hi Greg,
Think very very carefully before committing to a Trakka windscreen install.
Windscreens O'Brien would be the most expensive glass installer ever.
OH&S mandates etc usually prevent customer entry into WOs workspace, so you can't monitor/make decisions on the fly.
Install of top edge is a beast. Installers will hate it and you. Ask Hartmut. His install was a total nightmare.
If in good condition, re-use existing rubber seal. Better to use the seal you know fits rather than a new seal that may well prove to be a different profile and cause serious issues with poor/gaping fit between glass and seal. Fortunately I re-used my seal at the time, that helped a lot but was still a very hard top edge fit procedure. Tradies today hate a challenge, especially if it's not straightforward, taking too long, running behind schedule or nearly knock-off time.

What worked best for me was to order a replacement screen (full legal tint + darker top edge tint) through a mobile installer. So the two installers did the job in my garage, I was able to monitor the proceedings from go to wo, inspect opening for corrosion, crud etc and coax them along when it came to fitting the top edge.

So for this procedure, definitely arrange to be present for the duration, to hand over the vehicle and be absent, you may well rue the day.
Good luck.
Ken

Excellent advice Ken, as per usual, in my case they felt sorry for me. True Blue Windscreens worked with 2 guys all afternoon to get it in. It's a sh.. job , ask Jon,
But it was the best anyone could have done.

Ha ha. That is not exactly what you wrote in your maintenance log book Hart! You must have calmed down since.

But yes the windscreen is a mess and leaks like a sieve. They removed the Trakka pop-top seal and filled it full of sealant (badly). One day I will get around to removing all this gunk then re-fitting a new seal which I hope does not involve removing fibre-glass front roof piece.

Unsure why the window leaks but I think I remember Hart telling me that the window fitters were also trimming the screen itself to get it to fit. Could there be a dodgy batch of windscreens out there that do not quite fit? Also from what I have read elsewhere, a new seal is a good idea however again it is hard to come by a good one. I have a new seal from Brickwerks ready for when I get around to this as they are supposed to be as good as they get.

Cheers.

Jon.
