Transmission Oils

Hi Guys,

OK

Sorry for starting this but I'm looking to replace my gear oil and I'm wanting to preserve whats probably an ageing box.

SO has anyone used..

Penrite Transaxle 75-90 (G4) - seems well priced
See info -
http://www.penriteoil.com.au/pis_pdfs/TRANSAXLE%2075%20MAY%202012.pdf

How does this compare to considering the cost differential, I'm willing to pay the premium if SYNTRAX is a better way to go..
Then there's the corrosion issue with G5 does that apply to the SYNTRAX oil?

Castrol SYNTRAX 75-90 (G5) - Seems expensive
See info -
http://www.castrol.com/liveassets/bp_internet/castrol/castrol_australia/STAGING/local_assets/downloads/s/Syntrax75W_90_B1278983.pdf

In SA they use Castrol BOT130
What is our equivalent over here?

Thanks in Advance for your opinions..

Rowan
Rowan, Haven't used the penrite so can't comment on that but if you are going castrol the choices are as follows (in my books).
Gearbox      1. VMX 80 mineral GL4
                    2. SYNTRANS 75/90 Synthetic GL4 (not syntrax)
                    3. Syntrax as you suggest corrosion issue.
Front diff is a small capacity I say just go synthetic - syntrax GL5

This subject opens a can of worms every time it is discussed here and on other forums, might be worth reading some of those and also look at the oil company's web sites to see what they recommend for the syncro. Greg E

Hi Rowan,

Can’t really comment on the qualities of different oils and won’t speculate on that issue. Very recently had my Trakka box overhauled as it started to make a noise (typically diff noise).

When draining the oil before removing the box I found that it had Syntrax in it, when opening the box we found the pinion shaft bearing to be faulty, as well as all the synchronizers being cracked.

What we did not notice was corrosion and personally I cannot believe that an oil producing company could make a living for a long time it this was the case.

On price I think the difference of different products to be marginal, with Syntrax being $ 28.50 per litre or 114.—for the 4 ltrs. This was the cheapest part the gearbox repair.

In essence the oil choice is probably yours and I don’t think any of the mentioned oils will let you down.

Hartmut

Mineral Oil

1/ Better heat transfer keeping the gears cooler.
2/ Better under extreme pressure.

Synthetic

1/Better lubrication at all temperatures which could mean less wear.
2/Better at remaining on the gears.

Which is better?

Just make sure that it is not GL5 in the box.

GL5 oils contain sulphur which damage (corrode)  the copper alloys found in older boxes like those in the Syncro. That is the reason to use GL4 spec oil. It sounds like Syntrans is similar to the Castrol BOT130 we get in SA.

Hi All,

Thanks for all the advice folks.

In the end went for the Castrol Syntrans.
Mainly due to availability. Found it cheapest at Queensland Diesel Spares in Berleigh for $26.66 per liter. Cheapest quote $34.00 elsewhere Supercheap or Repco cant remember which.

I wanted to buy Penrite but could not find any available on GC.
So mabee next time...

During my research, I emailed the Penrite lubetech and they recommended for our Syncros;
SIN MAN TRANS GL4 SAE 75W-85

VW Alan from Stokers Siding also said you cant go wrong with the Penrite synthetic gear oil, which is much cheaper. Incidentally it also has a good rap over on the Range Rover Forum : ) I saw that they were advocating Penrite to go the distance as a suitable alternative to Castrol Syntrans. Also good for cold shifting. For future reference - good to support Aussie Family Owned Company from Melbourne dating back to 1926.

No I'm not related to the Penrite Family! Ha
Just trying to be helpful..

Cheers Rowan
