TX Valve

After 25 years of owning & driving 2, T3 2wds & one syncro and sharing wheels with offsets of 25, 12 and 0 between them , I'm satisfied that the wheel bearings can handle them. Eddie.
That's great news! I was about to shell out heaps for some wheels with the correct offset thinking I would suffer the consequences if I didn't. Thanks guys.

The more you raise the vehicle the more negative you want your off set to be. Greg E

Hello all
For over 6months my synchro cuts out (behaves as if the ignition was turned off) as I am travelling along. As soon as I turn the key off and then back on, it starts again. In a 100k trip this might occur twice. I have a new ignition switch (8 months old). What else could it be other than the ignition switch?
Is it something that will eventually cause the synchro not to start at all?

Any advice would be greatly appreciated
Thanks
Regards
Peter
Peter. Sounds like "vanagon syndrome". Its got something to do with static electricity build up in air flow meter. Google "VANAGON SYNDROME" lots of info on it. This forum has covered it many times. The primary solution is a harness which is plugged in line at the air flow meter. Vanagon specialists should be able to supply one. Van cafe, just kampers, go westy. This is primary culprit but blocked fuel filter, or failing hall sender can produce same symptoms. Vanagon syndrome was a problem from factory and vw supplied the harness free to combat problem. Bill
Do the gauges go to zero when it happens? Did it happen before the ignition switch was replaced? Greg E

Thanks Bill
I am aware of the Vanagon Syndrome. I have the harness - have had for some years now.
I will change the fuel filter and see if that helps.
I will also try to get a hall sender and find someone in Adelaide to replace it. - although I have read and watched a utube video on how to replace it, I am not that confident that I would be able to.
Does anyone know of a good T3/Synchro mechanic in Adelaide? Silvano from S & T Automotive  who was great but has retired.
Could anyone suggest where could I purchase a hall sender?
Regards
Peter

Thanks for your response. Yes, the gauges go to zero ( acts like I have turned the key off)
After I replaced the ignition switch the synchro went normally with no problems for a couple of months and then this started happening.

If the Gauges go to zero it is not your hall sensor. You should go back to your ignition switch plug and tighten up the spade terminals and clean and tighten all the earths. Also clean the Christmas tree earths near the fuse box. If that does not fix it replace the ignition switch again. Buy the new one from VW, they are cheap.
Think about doing the headlight relay mod. You need to remove as much load as possible from that little switch.

Hi Mark

I had to remove the dash to change my TX valve 18 months ago and used this attachment to help. It was invaluable. hope it goes well.

Would still love to talk to you at some stage about your conversion.  Regards  Greg

Hi Peter,

The following link explains another possibility your fuel and temperature gauges work at engine startup, work for a bit then stop working. This 3 pronged voltage regulator on the back of the instrument cluster may be the culprit and needs replacing as per GoWesty revised install procedure ....

Cheers.
Ken

If the Gauges go to zero it is not your hall sensor. You should go back to your ignition switch plug and tighten up the spade terminals and clean and tighten all the earths. Also clean the Christmas tree earths near the fuse box. If that does not fix it replace the ignition switch again. Buy the new one from VW, they are cheap.
Think about doing the headlight relay mod. You need to remove as much load as possible from that little switch.

Thanks for your response. Yes, the gauges go to zero ( acts like I have turned the key off)
After I replaced the ignition switch the synchro went normally with no problems for a couple of months and then this started happening.
Regards
Peter

Hello all
For over 6months my synchro cuts out (behaves as if the ignition was turned off) as I am travelling along. As soon as I turn the key off and then back on, it starts again. In a 100k trip this might occur twice. I have a new ignition switch (8 months old). What else could it be other than the ignition switch?
Is it something that will eventually cause the synchro not to start at all?

Any advice would be greatly appreciated
Thanks
Regards
Peter

That won't stop the engine from running.

Hi Greg,

actually I got lucky. Managed to get to the TX valve by taking out the glovebox and removing the top cover.
The evaporator and attached valve were then only 3 screws to lift up and access. Having the filter and val fitted and gassed next week.

Next time I'm heading south in the van I'll give you a call and drop in - Bunbury as I remember ?
It's a major effort to do the Subi 2.5 but it's a well trodden path now and pretty much makes the van what it always should have been. What I like most is the low end torque. You can pull away from about 40km in top gear.
If you plan to keep the van for a long time I wouldn't hesitate.

Mark
Thanks Mark, a bit of luck with the valve.  If I am in Perth can I look you up some time? G

I had those wheels on my Syncro. I just changed to Tiguan rims. They are not hub centric. I had to replace the wheel hub which was not fun. Syncro hubs are hard to find. Not sure of they were the culprit or not, thiugh I have my suspicions. I guess they were on there for many years and were ok.

Is your syncro standard gearing Nick?

Cheers,

Rowan

Thanks Pete, Hart. I'll replace the dryer - that's behind the left light so easy to access.
Pic attached of the Syncaru with new 235/75/15 tyres.
Have to say if they'd built them like this in the first place it would have been well ahead of it's time.
Pretty much perfect gearing / engine combo.

Just have to use it now !

Mark

They also have very thin sleeves on the nuts which like to break.
I've drilled them out and used a stronger lugnut.

But Rowan's right , they're not hub centric. Might go back
to some good ol' Merc steel rims
