Tyre Placard.

Dear Ben ,

I think the diameter of my tyres is 27.75" but the Cooper web site would verify for this size H/T. I haven't experienced any clearance problems (I DON'T have the 16" trailing arms) but I couldn't get the chains on the back when I had the 75 series tyres. I've only tried them on with the new 70 series tyres -haven't had cause to use them in earnest yet. As far as drivability goes I think it has become more driveable as the smaller tyre profile has masked the gap between 2nd and 3rd gear that I was more concious of when running the 75 profile tyres. It is reving harder though at 100 K. However I have always thought my 2.1 wasserboxer goes quite well and easily stays with other traffic but perhaps I'm getting old and anything seems fast when it replaced a T2 Kombi.
Cheers
Roger

Roger,do you know the diameter of your tyres?Do you have any clearance probs?I just wonder if we had of gone to the 75 series, would we be scrubbing,on lock. How is the drivability of your bus?Acceleration, uphill etc?

I bought 4 almost new tyres from someone who changed the original rims on a Toyota Hilux plus 2 new ones to give me 6 to circulate with 2 spares.I went for the predominately road tyre with the lower 70 profile as I find the majority of my driving is on bitumen and I was looking for something relatively quiet, longlasting with reasonable grip and roadholding. Ideally I would also have an aggressive set of mud tyres for going off road but I compromise by carrying chains if I am going somewhere really muddy.
>  I previously had Hankook Dynamic RF04 which was a block pattern 80/20 all terrain tyre with a slightly higher profile but narrower section (205 x 75). I got about 60,000kms circulating the 6 of them. I haven't found too much trouble getting the tyres I want with the 16" rims but I would have more options if they were 6" wide instead of 51/2" The slightly lower profile of the current tyres also means I can fit the chains on all wheels whereas before I only had enough clearance for the front wheels.

Phill,

Most email programmes have options for text and formatting. Plain text is
the default setting for many of them but, as you can see below, cannot cope
with much more than the basics. When you use the default reply function, it
is unable to recognize parts of the original email.

Have a look at the settings available to you and you should be able to clean
it up quite a lot. In this instance, I have used the default reply
function, so is using your Courier New font. My email programme is Outlook,
in which all parameters can be set.

Les

Les,
I am not using an email program. I just use the web.

On another subject, how do I send attachments when using the syncro forum?

Andy, the engine is an original Oettinger 4 WBX Oettinger also produced the 6cyl WBX with 160 hp (I think) these engines were original VW developments but because VW never went ahead

With them the designs were handed over to Oettinger. When I visited the Factory with Graham Lees in 1989 we saw a 6 cyl installed into a brand new Beetle ! This car was for the Prince of Monaco.

If this engine is in good nick it indeed is a rare find . Good Luck Hartmut

There was a guy in Sydney building Oettinger 4 WBX engines so there must be a fair few around. I think that they were 2.5 litres and required 98 fuel which was not available back then. They lowered the compression buy machining the heads with a hammer and chisel.

A lot of people say that they have Oettinger 4 WBX engines, but they are really just DJ pistons in the MV engine (Which is a good upgrade).

There were basically 2 2.1 engines available in the Transporter.

The MV (engine code) was low compression and the DJ had high compression.

We had the MV (70kW) which was made for third world fuel.

The DJ engine requires 98 RON and is 82kW.
