I do have an Atco compliance plate with build date 6/89,rivited on osf, under check strap.
Maybe this warning has to do with the different tyre pressures front to rear?I cant be the only one with it though.

That’s an interesting sticker, in that it doesn’t define ‘high speeds’. If it was of German origin, it might mean keep it under 250Km/hr on the autobahn!!
Perhaps it is of local origin, and may relate to the speed ratings of the available original ‘light truck’ or A/T tyres that were probably fitted. My T3 (1990 ex Telecom) didn’t have one there, but had one near the B pillar on the RHS. No mention of speed restriction though. I doubt if it has an implications for the VC, as a new VC (rather than the old stiff ones that most of us had or have) doesn’t suffer from highway driving. Certainly once I’d replaced mine, there were no issues, and I did 1000’s of high speed kilometers in the heat.

Ben,
Attached is a pic of the tyre placard on my Syncro. This bears a VAG number and can reasonably be presumed to be the original placard fitted by VAG.
Regarding the cautionary aspect of the placard on your vehicle, I would have to dig through the ADRs for the period to see if it is ADR related.
Going back a bit earlier in VAG history, the owners handbooks for new Beetles always carried a section on tyres which stated (fahrvergnugen notwithstanding) that high speed driving was the enemy of long tyre life. Given the level of tyre technology at the time, this was reasonable. I wonder if the placard on your Syncro is a continuation of this earlier time.

I remember my brother had a square back type 3 VW in the 70's that had original equipment 6ply tyres -hardly a necessity given its weight/load capacity. The explanation he was given was they were just that bit more expensive to make the local content reach the desired percentage. I am sure all our syncros were fully imported but there could have been some similar loophole in tariffs as they shuttled between Germany and Austria in the 80's which gave an advantage to lesser spec tyres and hence the placard.(There's no such restriction on my foil ones for 14" and 16" wheels.)
On the other hand this speculation may be just that- idle erroneous speculation on my part which wouldn't pass Les's first test of verifyable engineering knowledge..

Roger,
Without knowing the origin of the sticker on Ben’s Syncro, we are just speculating. I owned several Type 3s but have no recollection of the tyre placards on them. Ben’s sticker covers 5 ½ “ and 6” rims, so would cover T3 2WD as well as AWD. The last characters “T-2+5” are a puzzle on their own. I have attached another pic of the placard on my Syncro, showing that it is in the same place as Ben’s – left hand A pillar immediately under the door check link.
Ben,
Is it possible for you to post a picture of your sticker? It might ring a bell with someone, either here or overseas. As you say, you can’t be the only one with it. Mine is an aluminium foil sticker. Is yours foil or paper?
Could I ask everyone to take ten seconds to look at their own Syncro?

Phill,
This gets curiouser and curiouser. Mine was Ateco delivered and had 6” rims. Could the 5 ½ “ have been fitted to the early round headlight Syncros?

Les,
This is my original 14" wheel foil sticker which seems to be the same as yours in style and location. The 16" one was demanded and added when the original owner also purchased factory 16" wheels.
I agree my musings on the reason for the wording on Ben's sticker was pure speculation.
Cheers Roger

Hi Roger,Do you have 16 inch wheels? Can you tell us what rim they are? What tyres do you run?I have recentley put Yoky A/Ts Tyres onboard, and have nothing but praise for the package. My vehicle is better than it ever has been.Buying tyres for 16 inch tyres was a major drama.

Hi Fellows,
I'm currently running 215/70R16 Cooper Discoverer H/T Tyres on the VW 51/2" x 16 rims. I bought 4 almost new tyres from someone who changed the original rims on a Toyota Hilux plus 2 new ones to give me 6 to circulate with 2 spares.I went for the predominately road tyre with the lower 70 profile as I find the majority of my driving is on bitumen and I was looking for something relatively quiet, longlasting with reasonable grip and roadholding. Ideally I would also have an aggressive set of mud tyres for going off road but I compromise by carrying chains if I am going somewhere really muddy.
I previously had Hankook Dynamic RF04 which was a block pattern 80/20 all terrain tyre with a slightly higher profile but narrower section (205 x 75). I got about 60,000kms circulating the 6 of them. I haven't found too much trouble getting the tyres I want with the 16" rims but I would have more options if they were 6" wide instead of 51/2" The slightly lower profile of the current tyres also means I can fit the chains on all wheels whereas before I only had enough clearance for the front wheels.
You can see from my postings I am a little old lady who only uses the syncro to go to church on Sundays.
Cheers Roger
PS I have my original 14" rims/tyres/hubcaps advertised on the www.kombiclub.com site as I found I haven't used them.
