Tyre Pressure

Recently purchased a set of tyres (4), keeping the best of the old as
a spare. The tyres are Toyo "Open Country" M65 27 X 8.50 x R14 LT. I
had these tyres before and have been quite happy with them in their
road handling characteristics, and getting
something like 63,000klms from a set of 5,rotated every 10,000klms.
Economy tells me this time to only rotate the 4 tyres front to back
and keep the spare as a spare only.
The tyre people put 32lbs psi all round. The attached VW Syncro plate
in the passenger door states 36lbs front and 43lbs rear. If VW is
correct dosn't this go against the viscous coupling argument of
keeping all tyres /wheels the same tread/inflation all over to prevent
VC breakdown?
Can anyone help me in converting 27x8.50xR14 into "Volkspeak" (ie 205
x R14 97R) I hope.

As some of you already know, I am an engineer in the industry
(special vehicle engineer in Holden's R&D facility) and can assure
you that engineering is always a balance of compromises, no less so
in tyres than all the rest.

Because:-
the principal drive of the T3 Syncro is on the rear wheels,
wheel slip,
the weight distribution is about equal,
plus a few other factors,
the VW spec of 36/44 is the best compromise.

This will produce a fairly equal rolling radius (known as SLR) and
keep the speed differential between the axles to a minimum in terms
of effective drive. The viscous coupling (when new) doesn't begin
to have an effect, ie take drive, until there is about a 6%
difference.

This is a simplification but rest assured that the VW placard tyre
pressures are correct for this vehicle.

About that info on tyre pressures.... what are your
reccomended ones for a 215/75R15 BFG A/Ts on a
camperised syncro on the more or less 1500 kg total
weight???

Jon,

Tyre pressures are usually set low in passenger vehicles as a matter of course to provide comfortable running.  It has always been the case that an extra 4-6 PSI gives far better response.  In this case, be guided by the original Syncro tyre pressure table and you will find it to be about right.  34PSI is ridiculous!!

Hi Jon,
Hard to say really without knowing the tyre model and its specs which should be fully detailed on the tyre wall including rated maximum load & tyre pressure. Had it on a weigh platform when fully laden?

Hi Jon,

I had my new Mefros fitted with 225/75 R15 Bridgestone Dueler along with tyre pressure/temperature gauges on all six tyres (2 spares).

The pressure/temperature gauges have been very educational.
I aim for 40psi when warm, but it depends on the ambient temperature, the amount of heat in the roads, how fast Ii am driving and the load.

An example: Yesterday I left home at around 34.6 psi on all four and the temperature went up to about 38.5 psi during a one hour expressway drive.
It was interesting because there was a laden trailer on the back with a load bias onto the back wheels and they were 39.5.

Had it been high summer out around Parkes and Dubbo, the pressures would have been in the forties.

It is all back gas theory physics: P1 x V1 / T1 = P2 X V2 /T2
Where if you hold the volume constant, that is V1 = V2, and if P1 & T1 are the Pressure and temperature when you start out in the morning then as T2 increases during the day P2 must increase proportionately where temperature is measured in degrees Kelvin.
An example: You leave home at tyre temperature of 25 deg Centigrade which is 298 deg K.
During the drive your tyres reach 70 deg C which is 343 deg K .
This means that your tyre pressure will rise by approximately 15%,
so if you start off with 35psi your tyres will reach more than 40 psi on the journey.

And this is what I've been observing with my pressure/ temperature gauges.

Firestone Destination AT LT205/75 R15 103/100S.


The previous owner had the van on the weigh bridge but I have misplaced the doco for now. From memory it was getting up there. 

As per the recent post about 15" wheels, as these were never offered as standard, the Syncro tyre pressure chart makes no mention of them. I have inflated to 40 psi for now.

Peter, I have also fitted tyre pressure gauges that I acquired off eBay for cheap. Now I just need to build the hardware to read them (another project).

I know that some of you are also running 15” Firestone A/T  LT 205/75 R15 tyres. Just wondering what tyre pressure people are running? The van is a Trakka conversion and usually pretty loaded up when we head out.

I run 38. There was a thread on this a few years ago and Les did a lot of testing and I think came up with a similar figure. My tyres wear even at that pressure so it must be close.
