Dear Les,Finally regarding the recent VC discussion which emphasised the need to keep all tyre diameters the same, why do the VW inflation stickers specify a 4lb/ 0.3kpa differential between front and rear tyres? Would it be better to run them all the same?CheersRogerT3 Syncro Campervan

Tony,
On the driver's door frame is a placard telling you what tyre pressures to use. Follow it!
Les
Some vehicles placards may have faded due to "Door Droop".
Does anyone have a photo of this placard?

Tony,
Yes, that is correct but that does not in turn suggest that they tyre pressures front and rear should be the same. They should be as per the placard. I am trying to post a picture of the tyre placard but the current Yahoo outage is blocking me. I will send it to your email address.

Les & Tony,
I find that strange. Surely IF tyre pressures were important to wheel speeds a front/rear differential could affect the VC, whereas a side to side differential would only matter if a diff-lock was engaged. However, I remember a long and technical debate on this subject many years ago (I think on the American site), and the general consensus was that moderate changes in tyre pressures don’t affect the rolling diameter much at all. There is, after all, a steel belt around the tyre which is not going to stretch. With moderate differences, even though the loaded radius might seem affected the tyre will act (in a minor way) like a tank track, and still traverse the same distance for each rotation. Only if deflation is substantial (ie, nearly flat) will the tyre squirm enough to change the effective rolling diameter. Now, I’d defer to Les’s technical expertise on this, but it makes sense to me.

Hi All Fellow Syncro Owners, in regards to tyre pressures the ones quoted on the original placards was only for the ORIGINAL MICHELIN TYRES which have not been available for over 10 years, they were the 205R14 which was made especially for the VW SYNCRO the ones you buy now DO NOT have the same rolling diameter and are not the same tyre hence the pressures quoted dont mean anything anymore. So depending on your choice of tyre, this will affect your tyre pressures....anyway a tyre pressure range around 36-40psi is acceptable and they all shoud be of the same value of course which ever you choose.........--- On Thu, 9/7/09, Les Harris <leslieharris@optushome.com.au> wrote: |

Michelin is just not making that 205/80/14 109 rated tyre currently (still listed in their catalogue and website) - apparently big production cut backs. That tyre had a roll circumference of 686mm. The XCD is still listed on the Michelin site: http://www.michelin.com.au/tyres/lightTruck_XCD.asp
I looked at a Hankook and Nankang in the 75 with same load, but roll circ 664 and also not available.
Finally found Maxxis 205/80/14 with load index 109 with rolling diametre of 686mm @$159.
http://www.maxxis.com/AutomobileLight-Truck/Light-Truck-SUV/UE-168N-Bravo-Series.aspx
Click Specs you will see all available - I have the 205/14/80 with 109 Load Index which is 100% correct to the original and correct for the 6J original VW alloy RIM that I have.
Issues like tread pattern, ride quality etc will be of course subjectively different.
Mark.

The earlier request may have been made a bit redundant by subsequent commentary but for the records I've photographed the 2 official VW stickers on my car for its 14" and 16" rims. The later was obtained by my original owner when he purchased 6 genuine VW 16" rims. Sorry about the quality, its an awkward place to photograph with the reflections from the foil stickers. Cheers Roger --- On Thu, 9/7/09, Les Harris <leslieharris@optushome.com.au> wrote: |
