Tyres

I just found out, not a good choice, only available as a passenger tyre.

I am very happy with my Kumho tyres also Francesca. They are quiet, cheap and have taken me to a lot of offroad places in all conditions. Greg

Hi Greg, what is the type/number of the kumho tyres you are running? They have a few options from what I can see in the 4x4 SUV category.

What is wrong with running a passenger tyre? Doesn't the placard on our syncros recommend passenger tyres?

Erik,

There’s nothing wrong with highway tyres so long as they are of the correct load rating or above.   You sacrifice off-road grip but you get a quieter day to day ride.

Hi Peter

My Khumo tyres are; Radial 857 215/70R 150. They are a Light Truck tyre. I am told they have as high a load carrying capacity (or greater) as an off road tyre but the tread is not as aggressive. As posted previously I have done a lot of off road work with them without complaint. I think the only time I would want different tyres is in heavy mud. Greg

That's a small diameter tyre for a syncro. 215/75 r15 would be more like it. Greg E

Thanks Theo. My rims are being picked up today to be sent to Port Macquarie. Should be here early next week.

I am going to look at Geolanders, BFGs and will now check out the ones you have mentioned. My bus has about 20mm of extra height so I might go for 215x65x15.

Will be interested to see what our fellow owners have to say about the maxxis. There are also a lot of posts in the archive section with varied views on tyres.

Cheers, Peter from Port M

Lots of myths about this one!

What is wrong with running a passenger tyre? Doesn't the placard on our
> syncros recommend passenger tyres?
If you see a 'P' .......well, here in the US anyway ..don't know what your system has ..but could be the same , in the front of any tire size, such as P205/70 R15 .......that means it's a Passenger car tire.
You deffenitely don't want those on a T3 syncro .
The handling and steering respsone will be vauge or mushy some..
and they won't have a load rating high enough for a vanagon.

LT tires are one spec for T3 vans ..such as ....195/75 R14 LT . That's a 2WD T3 Vanagon size for some years, the LT means 'light truck.'
LT tires are adequate for T3 vanagons.

you will also see load rating C or load rating D ..
as in 185 R14C  ( which , confusingly can come in either C or D load rating )
also C or D load rating can also be called 6PR or 8PR ..which means '6 ply rating.'

I run, for exampe, Micheling Agilles 205/65 R15C tires.
that's a C load rated excellent summer/rain tire very adequate for T3 vans ....though no any off raod tire or a very large tire, but excellent road tire .

One place where you really tell the load rating, and thus sidewall stiffness, is to look at the max load rating in lbs, on the side of the tire ..( for 'single' ......not for 'dual' mounting ) and how many psi max , measure cold , the tire is capable of.
A typical C ( aka 6PR ) tire might be able to carry say 1,680 lbs at 55 psi max, cold.
the same tire in D ( aka 8PR ) might be 1.750 lbs max , mounted single, at 65 psi cold max pressure.

I strongly recommend against D  ( 8PR ) tires mounted in the front. In my eperinece..if the pressure it on the high side of the allowed range, the van tends to jump around on bumps some, rather than track straight like it should. If I lower front tire pressure to fix that, the 'turn in' sharpness goes away ..and steering input repsonse is vague.

what I really like ....is D's in the rear, and C's in the front.
If running a tire ( and 14's are passe anyway ) but if running say 185 R 15C's ...
D laod rating ones in the rear, and C's in the front gives very good steering turn in repsonse, and stabiilty while cornering.
on my michelin agilles 205/65 R15C's while they are both C load rated ..
about 5 ot 6 pis more in the rear ....and straight line tracking, turn in repsonse, and stability while cornerig are very good.
If I try to set up four 185 R15C's in D load rating ....I just can't get the handling/tracking/sterring repsonse that I want ...no matter what I do with the tire pressures.
But D's in the rear, C's in the front ..perfect.
195 R15C is also a good T3 van size.

one more thing ..
on the tire placard for some T3 Syncro vans you'll see   '205/70 R14 Reinforced.'

those are very rugged orignal type tires. Uusually we don't see tires with the 'reinforced' label on them these days, but you may see that.

last line ...some some Syncro tire labels ....it shows D tires in the rear, C's in the front.
You can't rotate them front-to-rear to even out wear that way ..
but the handling benefit is well worth it.
"many' modern cars, particularily performance cars ..
or almost all performance cars have dedicated front and rear tires.
so do all motorcyles,
and ( usually ) all open wheel formula type race cars.
having dedicaed front and rear tires ...
by load rating or size ..is 'always' benefical  ( rear drive cars anyway ) in terms of handline.
Synco's of course must run the same size tires all around.

but there's a lot to be gained .......
first , T3 Van tires have to be rated strongly enough ....stiffer sidewalls compared to car tires is one factor ....plus load rating ..
with intellegent selection tire type, and wheels, and tire pressures there's a lot to be gained
in terms of on the road handling ..and safety.
off road is another ball game of course.

and you can not count in tire stores to sell you the correct tires for your Syncro ..
not where I am anyway. Some will just put on 'P' tires and not know better at all.
Tires .....and tires and wheels...
are a lot of fun. And rewarding to get just right.
The discussion can go on forever of course.  So many choices and differeing requirements for various T3 owners.

That is a load of rubbish.

If the LI is 100 it doesn't matter if it is LT or P.
I agree. I found that the maxxis ma-1 passenger tires in 235/75/15 with a load rating of 105 actually surpass the load rating of some equivalent LT tires which are a 104 or less. The reason I'd asked about passenger tires is actually because I ran them on my kombi (europa 195/70/14) on a round oz trip with no problems other than 7 or 8 easy to repair punctures in 50,000km. No sidewall issues even when airing down very low (10psi) on sand.  About 15,000km were 4x4 tracks and extreme corrugations. I may have had even less punctures had I run some light trucks but I guess we'll never know. I probably would be running a set of maxxis now If i hadn't found such a good deal on the mickey thompson ATZs instead.

I also have done a bit of running around but, no joy so far. Most of
the tyres mentioned so far, I think, are only available as Passenger
tyres, not Light truck. Our rims are only 6" wide which restricts our
choice some-what. So, I just have to keep on looking.

Hi all,

Just to push the tyre saga along a little bit, Lloyd at Volkwerke has given me the number of someone who runs a tyre business locally who he thoroughly recommends for sound advice and who supplies all their tyres. Dave at Bundoora Tyres is away until Tuesday, but I'm going to give him a call next week to see what he has in stock. Lloyd himself goes for Hankook tyres and suggests a high-profile tyre. A key piece of advice (no surprise, really): stay away from tyre franchise places, they'll sell you whatever they happen to have on their shelves. Anyway, will let you know how I go.

Francesca.
I would never believe a tyre salesman.

Francesca,
Probably be better if you use the collective wisdom here (now that can be debatable at times) and tell us what you have come up with as first choice, but before committing. Give us a chance to tear strips off your logic .... haha. Might just help you some more and others in the a similar circumstance.
Cheers.

Sure thing. I'm not about to do anything precipitately, or place undue trust in any tyre salesman, recommended or not. Worth checking out a few options, though.

Francesca, I think the most important thing you do before seeing a tyre dealer is decide on the size. Any tyre dealer you visit will know zero about modifying a vw syncro. From what i have gleaned from other syncro heads I would be looking at 215/75/15 as a safe choice for a standard syncro. Of course an all terrain tyre is needed and the best would be arguably the BF Goodrich at ko (also the most expensive). When you think you know what you want I would post the tyre type and price on this forum, someone has probably been there. Off the subject I just wanted to say thanks for the Brunny Island suggestion. It was magnificent. There is a camping spot at the very south end of the island called cloudy corner, the best camping spot ever!!! The only problem was getting stuck in the floods in st Hellens ment we only got two days in Brunny. Greg E
P.s. have never seen a hankook All Terrain!

Francesca

I just looked up the guy I bought my BFGs from that i mentioned. Jax Quickfit, 370 Lygon ST. 9388 8870.

He's been consistently cheaper for other tyres that i've bought in the last few years. I paid $206/tyre at the end of 2008.
